Title: SET UP ON REAR GEARS
Post by: hemidakota on October 21, 2014, 12:36:57 PM
Well we had a great time at CHRR for sure until spool let loose of all left axle splines. So my question is on setting up gears. Does everyone set gears up just like any other set of gears? Or do you shoot for a tighter backlash with a good pattern or just perfect pattern? Thanks for input as usual.

Was it an alluminum spool ?

Been running the same alu spool and 31 spline axles for since '91, last time I checked it was '95, Blown alc 7-0Pro

Yes it was a 31 spline axle and alum spool

The 31 spline is kind of small . As for the gears I tend to set them on the loose side . I try to set them around .010 but if they end up at .012 thats ok .  I use a tool to set my pinion depth but some times you may have to move it a couple of thou either way to get a good pattern . Just don't rush . Bill

So find out that the case is cracked so I will be upgrading.  Going with a 3.25 bearing case so we can go 35 or 40 spline.  What do you guys think about an aluminum case for the FED?  Found some info online saying the aluminum is for a lighter (under 2000 lbs) car.  Is it worth the weight savings vs the strength?
Also, something else we found when taking it apart is the axle splines only went into the spool about 1" on both sides.  Is this normal?  Didn't seem like a lot of contact.

40 spline is a waste, 35 pretty much standard across the board. Aluminum is strong enough to get the job done and then  some. If you need weight back there ,go with the iron, If not and the price is OK then the alu. Spline ingagment should be equal to the dia of the axle plus 25%. Be careful on mixing supliers, MW offers a propiatary spline along with standard spline.
If your housing has Ford bearing ends and is 27-3/8" bearing flange to bearing flange, I have a really nice pair of standard 35 spline MW liteweight  axles w/studs and bearings

If you have to buy a case I wold go with the aluminum one . The Mark Williams through bolt case is really nice and uses 7/16 studs for the pinion support . As Bruce said the 35 spline is just fine for what you are doing .
