Electronics / Mechanical overspeed protection
« on: January 18, 2020, 11:45:18 AM »
We have a points mag with two tach drive ports.
We are looking for a mechanical, cable driven overspeed device. I found a article on a Syncro-Start overspeed governor. I was listed at 3000-3825 rpms. At 1/2 engine speed that would be 6000-7650. Not sure if we could even find one.
Anyone have any experience using on of these?
Thanks...

Spud Miller's Cave / K valve ???
« on: October 14, 2019, 07:00:07 PM »
Hi Spud.....a very strange thing happened this past weekend....
K-valve on 16-71 blower. We started the car for warmup and it sounded like it was missing. #1 cylinder was very weak at exhaust pipe. I checked compression and it was fine...changed spark plug and wire...no change. Richened the barrel valve from 75% (where it has been since day one) to 88% and it fixed it????
I did have to increase the butterflys a bit to get  the idle RPM right.
I thought the idle check might have stuck open.....but it checked fine. Checked to make sure the arm on injector didn't slip. My one can is after the barrel valve. Checked it and it was fine.
Data from the runs shows good fuel pressure...same as past data.
What should I look at?

A friend of mine is looking to buy a SBC blower intake with burst panel.
Is there one with longer runners to keep fuel distribution more even?

Spud Miller's Cave / Enderle fuel pumps
« on: October 04, 2017, 07:02:38 AM »
Hi Spud !!!!!
My present fuel pump is a Enderle 110 vane style. 12.4 gpm
I have a Enderle SG810 (110 equivalent) 13gpm spur gear style that I would like to run on the race car.
I know I have to account for the larger GPM in the tune up.....my questions are:
Does the gear pump move fuel at a different rate thru out the rpm range...do I need to worry about that? and the pressures that may come along with that?
Does the gear pump "suck" better......maybe less susceptible to the air bubble when hitting the chutes?
Thoughts on each ?
Thanks again for all you do !!!

Thanks

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / 67 Chevy powerglide question
« on: January 26, 2017, 06:44:36 PM »
Hi Dan.....we are going to swap the powerglide out of a 67 Chevy wagon with a 307 2 barrel......with a turbo 350 from a 36 Chevy streetrod. It has a 350 4barrell. He thinks it has a aftermarket converter. So......before we get into this I would like to know if we can swap input shafts to keep the stock converter in the wagon?
Thanks !!!!

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Powerglide fluid leak
« on: September 05, 2016, 08:00:33 AM »
NOT mine !!!!!  lol
A friend's race PG leaks at the pump area. Not when it is running...after it has set for a day. I mentioned about the pump bolts you seal just to be sure...but they were dry. Around the pump looked dry.
The engine has been line bored a couple of times...could the convertor be too high from the crank moving up in the block and cause the leak? It wasn't moved up enough to cause any gear drive issues.....so it can't be up much.
So our question is....could the convertor seal leak at rest and not when running?  Could the outside pump o-ring leak only at rest?
Happy Holiday !!!!

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Turbo 400 problem
« on: February 22, 2016, 02:50:16 PM »
Hi Dan ...asking for anew friend in LHC. He has a Studebaker with a Turbo 400. Trans worked good when he parked it. Now it only has 1st and second gear. He added fluid...he took the govenor out and checked it OK...replaced the modulator. Removed the valve body and checked what he could, and nothing was stuck. He owned a garage in Wisconsin so he is handy!
Any ideas as to what to look for?
Thanks,
Steve

Spud Miller's Cave / Blower / fuel at idle
« on: January 16, 2016, 02:38:12 PM »
Hi Spud.....I have an issue LOL...
Switched my 496 Arias Hemi from a 14/71 std helix (well worn in) to a fresh 16/71 HH retro set back to account for the front cut out. I was running the std. 14/71 at 15 to 20 % OD to make approx. 17 lbs. of boost to go 7.0.  My 14/71 std moved 500 cu.in./rev.  You don't list a 16 on your chart but it looks like each inch of rotor adds about 32 cu.in./rev....so I think my 16/71 should make 632. Now to get the new blower to move the same amount of air my old one did at 15% over....I started out with it 15% under.  Hopefully so far so good.

I started the engine and cyl #1 is VERY rich and # two is a close second (90-120 degrees). The other 6 are rich but OK (220-300 deg). It seems to clear up if I rev it.  I had the hat nozzles big in front and smaller to the rear....I switched them, front to back, and didn't make any difference.
I leaned the barrell valve A LOT and it helped. I checked the port poppet and it was at 15lbs. I changed the MSD 20 ignition box...no change. I ohm the wires and all are good. Leaked to barrell valve to get back to my starting point and the problem is back. I opened up the Shotgun blades from .014 to .019 to make sure they weren't getting sucked closed. Just made the idle higher.

So why are the front cylinders so rich? Do I have the blower spinning too slow at idle?  Maybe does not move as much air as I thought?  Too much fuel and not enough air......but I'm not sure why.
Thanks....
