Roo Man's Room / More wheelie bar questions
« on: May 21, 2017, 02:05:24 AM »
I read lots here about folk hitting their wheelie bars hard and unloading their slicks. When or why did sprung wheelie bars become unfashionable?

I see mention here of running 10.5 tyres on 12 and 14" rims. I ran them on 8 and 10" rims back in the old days. What's the pros and cons of various combinations?
Cheers

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Any Torque Flight experts on here?
« on: February 18, 2017, 10:07:59 PM »
I want to speak to some one who's very knowledgeable on the TF 904 trans. I have lost reverse gear after changing from a Trans Go kitted manual valvebody to a Tranzact of Indy trans brake. Reverse is supposed to work with out engaging the brake but it's no where to be found ?

Front Engine Dragsters / Shortie Transmissions

Just curious why guys who have the engine way out from the axle centre line are often running short transmissions with long coupler shafts rather than just a regular lenth trans?

Spud Miller's Cave / What's going on with these earth straps ?

Howdy.
These plugs are NGK BP6ES from a small block mopar. It's an 10.5 :1 engine with factory iron heads. Has a 4" single butterfly injector on methanol. The plugs were gapped at.018" with an internal coil Vertex. It was a pig to start so I took the Mag out fitted a factory Magnetic dist and a MSD6A box with a conventional oil filled coil. Reset the plugs to .040". I have only run the car once previously (with the Vertex) and it was very rich, I did damage and have repaired changed the ignition and ready to go again. As well as changing the ignition I've leaned it out a heap. It is still hard to start but I ran it last week and after a few minutes it started to break down - can't call it missing it was way more complex than that. I pulled the plugs today to close the gaps to about .035 and this is what I found. Number 3 plug (second from the front on the left looking toward the front of the car, and numbers 2 and 4 ( the first and second plug on the right side facing the front of the car). Don't worry about how dirty and sooty they are that's becausse I've been messing around trying to start with a squirt bottle with petrol and meths (at different times of course.) I checked the manifold is tight in case it was as simple as an air leak but OK. I figure I'm not the only person to have seen this before so what is it? Have you had it.

Front Engine Dragsters / The next source of frustration - starting 'er up
« on: September 02, 2016, 10:54:28 PM »
Man what next. The story so far ... been nearly 30 years since I ran a FED with a single 4 barrel carb 302 Ford and clutch-flite. Three years ago I bought a basket case FED and front halved it, up graded the cage and fitted a Chrysler small block and torque flight. Went out last October and killed the engine straight away. I rebuilt and initially ran the engine with a carb to run it in a bit (flat tappet engine) then decided to run a meth carb but got stiched up by a speedway guy so have re fitted my injection.  Have a vertex. These old ideas were great in thd old days of push starts but short of going to two batteries how do I get an easy start from this thing. I' m too old for all these "challenges " this car is throwing up. Lol. I want a simple set up hence the mechanical injection and magneto.

Front Engine Dragsters / Didn't see this coming
« on: August 20, 2016, 01:41:53 AM »
I've had to build a new engine, sort a mystery trans problem, have replaced  my rear wheels and brake master cylinder. Now I've added an additional 12 lbs of ballast to my stomach and I'm finding entry and exit problems. I'm too old for the gym. LOL.

Spud Miller's Cave / Mathematical gymnastics
« on: August 12, 2016, 03:46:48 PM »
Hi Spud.
A year or two back you gave me a simple formula to work with based on the results from your NA tune up calculator to work out the difference between the pill and nozzle sizes at a lower RPM than the 8000 in the calculator. I mean if a person runs the figures in the calculator how to read them at a lower RPM? Does that make sense? I've lost them, can you help again please?

Spud Miller's Cave / How to calculate volume of fuel required

What are the mental gymnastics required to establish the volume of fuel required and hence pump size when using a methanol carb?

Front Engine Dragsters / Belt drive pump on carb engine.
« on: July 11, 2016, 03:25:25 AM »
Howdy.
Been 30 years since I played with a carb. I fitted a Holley DP and electric Carter pump running 98 pump gas to my car. I run a dry block. I was unimpressed with how hot it got and how quick it got there.  I've sold the carb and have purchased a Methanol Holley from a local speedway racer. Given the increase volume of fuel required (x2.2ish)? using meth I assume my electric pump wont cut it. I have an Enderle 80A-1 belt drive pump what sort of return set up do I need to use to run it and at what sort of pressures or is the pump just too big? Would a regular electric pump do the job? What about a second Carter so I have two pumps going up to the regulator and then a return line?  That would be an economical way to go.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Front Engine Dragsters / Where do the old race Hemi engines go ?
« on: July 05, 2016, 12:18:28 AM »
Howdy
We've had aftermarket aluminium Hemi engines around since the 1970's. All the these early engines are obsolete - except to someone like me.  The resto / cackle crowd are using up the iron engines and maybe the 417 Donavons. An early KB with a 6-71 and bird catcher or stack injection with a 'glide would be a cool indestructible package in a 7 or 8 sec FED. Where are they ?

Howdy
Any little guys running petrol a carb and zoomies who can help me. I killed an engine last year during my first meeting since the 1980's because fundamental things like oil had changed formulas and removed Zinc. I've rebuilt (Chrysler small block) and to run it in and sort it out I've removed my fuel injection and gone from methanol to 750 DP Holley and petrol. I have 6-8" flames out of the pipes. Yes it looks cool but I don't want to kill a second engine so  school me on running pump gas. Is this the norm with 98 ULP?
Cheers

Front Engine Dragsters / More on tyres
« on: June 06, 2016, 12:22:50 AM »
Howdy.
Firstly,  I have a pair of M/T 31x13x15 's (part number 3072) M/T lists them at being 98" circumference. I'm looking to go to a 10.5 or 11" tyre and liked their 31x10.5x15 W (PN 3068W) which they list at 99" circ.  I measured my existing at 5psi on a 10" rim and they measure 100"?. Hoosier list a 29.5x10.5x15 (PN18192)with a 96" circumference which is closer to 30.5" Dia.  How can I buy a set of tyres when the dimensions are all over the joint? What do I believe - is one maker better than the other when it comes to this?
And secondly, Does anybody run M&H Racemasters? They have list the right size for me 10.5 x 30.5 @97" circ (MHR094) but I had a pair in the very early 1980's on a clutch auto equipped FED and they were  inconsistent run to run.
Interested in your thoughts.
Cheers

Front Engine Dragsters / 1/8th mile gears
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:26:44 PM »
Howdy.
Following from my post about gears and tyres what are you guys running on the 1/8 mile? A Mate has a set of 5.0 gears gathering dust and I'm thinking 6500 RPM through the top end would see me right.  I had a look at a couple of online calculators but don't really think they are very accurate.  Here's my story :-  I have a 366 Chrysler basic engine - standard heads. Should make 400 - 420 HP 400 Ft/Lbs with a carb. My TF904 has a 2.45 1st gear. Currently 4.3 diff and 31" tyre. I lashed out on an 8" converter that has 5200 stall but because of Torqueflight transmissions willingness to literally explode I'm not using a trans brake and the the car isn't heavy enough to get the converter to flash up properly.  Most of the basic 1/8th mile cars in my area are using 1/4 mile gears so I figure the only way I can get around 'em from the back of the qualifying order is to beat 'em in the first half of the track hence the change to a lower gear set. Any thoughs and no I don't see a powerglide in my future. What Tyres Gears Rpm are you guys running in your little guy 1/8th mile combos.
Cheers
