Front Engine Dragsters / Re: 7.0 and nitro
« on: October 14, 2022, 11:09:02 AM »
Chris, in the NDRL there were I think 3 of us running nitro, but I was the only blown car.  Blown nitro is not legal in 7.0 for the heritage series (it is legal in 7.50) but the NDRL had an agreement with HNRA for the only heritage race we ran at the reunion in Bowling Green.

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: How much nitro is too much to start
« on: September 07, 2021, 01:48:25 PM »
20% is not going to cause you any grief, ASSUMING you are not trying to run high compression on it (over 10:1).  The issue is with nitro on a cold engine it does not want to burn so you end up contaminating the oil.  It gets to be a problem when you're 50% and up.  That's why we start and warm up on alky.  Blown on nitro you'll be fine.  Unblown and injected on nitro is a whole different animal.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Potential FED Build
« on: April 27, 2021, 08:58:33 AM »
Lynn, Jon Hansen (Hayden Industries) is a wealth of knowledge on wheels/tires, and I'm sure will comment here.  It's not the speed, it's the weight.  I ran a set of Jon's wheels with Kenda ribbed tires for several years on my FED, then had one go down on a 220 MPH pass.  In hindsight and in talking with Jon, I probably did not have enough air pressure (I ran 32-35 psi) and had the tire come off the rim.  Jon made it right with me, but I did switch back to Goodyear front runners.  They are not nostalgic, but the bead is much heavier.  FYI, I run 60 psi in the Goodyears.

Chrysler/Donovan hemi guy here, but when I ran on gas with an iron block and heads I ran water in the heads and partially filled block, and vented from the front water fillers into the front zoomie pipes on each side.  When you saw water vapor out the front tubes you knew you had heat.  On straight alky-no water.  75-80% nitro now....no water needed for sure.  I have heard of heat issues on the center cylinders on Chev (ring seal not as good) but the Chev guys would be better informed to comment on that.  My opinion is the less fluids you can get away with the better just from a safety standpoint, like Dave pointed out.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: wheel disc
« on: March 09, 2021, 09:20:00 AM »
Mine was fastened in 3 places, equally spaced.  An stainless steel strap about 1/4" wide, maybe 3/4" long and 1/16" thick went around a spoke and was riveted to the disc using 2 rivets.  I took it off many years ago because I thought it looked better without.  I think the staging beam heights are pretty stand now so you probably don't need it as far as function is concerned.  I was at a car show once and a guy wanted to know why I only had a hubcap on one side!

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: measuring nitro percentage
« on: February 24, 2021, 09:17:18 AM »
I think those guys had lots of secrets.  They ran very small nozzles and very high fuel pressure.  If you haven't seen it, there's an excellent series on the web about them.  One of the last interviews Tom Jobe did.  He gives a great analogy to the concept of burning the fuel vs. exploding it.  The story about hauling their 55 gal. drums of nitro in a VW beetle is funny as xxxx.

OK, now I get what you are doing, just a quick check.  I've not seen one, but does a proofing hydrometer measure "proof"?  If so, would the actual alcohol content be 1/2 of that reading?  If you stick it in 100% alky does it read 200?  If you're just using it as a reference I guess it really doesn't matter what the actual number is, only the relative value compared to your specific gravity hydro.

The simple solution is just to run 100% nitro and don't fuss with the hydro ;)

Hey Chris, like Dave said go to Spud's FIE website.  In the "nitro notes" section he has charts that show percentages for a given specific gravity at a specified temperature.  Steve K.
