Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Rodeck 481 BBC block info needed
« on: December 31, 2015, 08:26:46 AM »
That is why I am asking questions as I really do not know anything about these blocks.  I did read on another site these are not made anymore but someone said parts are available, but I have not been able to find anything online about the block or any spare parts.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Rodeck 481 BBC block info needed
« on: December 31, 2015, 06:45:54 AM »
So I have someone local that is selling a Rodeck 481 BBC short block. I really cannot find any info online for these blocks. It has a very wide water pump that is obviously special to this block and it does look to take a BBC oil pan and normal BBC heads.

Does it take a normal BBC timing setup?

It also looks to have spacers for the intake.

Any information is appreciated.

So I cracked my case and a friend gave me his good old case (he switched to aftermarket case) and while inspecting it before putting my parts into his case I found some differences.
Let me also say I am no expert on automatic transmissions and this is my first teardown and rebuild. This is a full manual valve body powerglide going into a FED.

First I see that his case has a hole plugged that I have read needs to be enlarged with its corresponding hole on the bottom of the case.

old case

He had this in a drag car so I do not know why this would be plugged. Can anyone tell me why this was plugged and should I drill this out? It was drilled out on my old case. Are there any other modifications I should do or can do to a stock case to make it better?

This is from some of the instructions I found online on what to drill.

Also, I found this in the bottom of the pan. The internals have about 20 passes and when we took it apart it took 6 full turns to tighten the band. Is this band material since it was so loose?  We inspected all the clutches and they still look new and the band does not look bad.

Thanks
Scott

I have a very old set of aluminum heads and started to pull rocker studs out right and left and was fixing with helicoils then those pulled out.  Had my machinist put timeserts in every hole and have not had one issue since.  I am sold on them.

Thanks for all the input guys, always learning on this site.

Finally cracked my stock case Powerglide at the CHRR so I am going to upgrade to an aftermarket case and whatever other goodies.
So what options should I go for?  What gear ration?  Roller tailshaft?
I run NE1 and have a 4:10 gear.

thanks
Scott

Finally got my motor parts back and did the build this weekend.  Topped it off with my daughter putting the finishing touches on it.

John, This is Scott with the big ass hoosiers.  What size rim do you guys recommend with the 12" slicks?  Also, do you still have some left?

We have narrower our tire shake down to tire pressure and anything over 6.5 lbs (except at Bakersfield) will shake hard.

Our last time out the car shook 3 times, off the line and then had to hit again twice before it settled down.  The shake was so violent it broke
wheelie bar
front axle got bent
broke float bowl
cracked a valve cover
broke crank mandrel
broke ignition box
just in one pass, not to mention when the floats broke it flooded the motor with alcohol and blew out both head gaskets.

Wish I had this info when I was buying slicks last year.

I run a Milodon gear drive on my BBC and have never had any of those issues.  My guess would be to go back over the install process and make sure everything is adjusted and installed perfectly.

I did get a timing buzzer with my setup but just looking to see if there was a certain kind or brand to use for a quick timing check.

I also have a self powered summit timing light but like you said it is not bright enough to see in the day time in the pits.

Spud Miller's Cave / Timing light for magneto?

So what kind of timing light do I need for a mag?  Can someone suggest or recommend one?  I heard or read that the newer ones with advance and stuff are not to be used on a magneto?  Is this true?
Thanks
Scott
