Title: Top Lube Question
Post by: dusterdave173 on February 13, 2016, 05:44:07 AM
Just got a new sealed drum of VP brand M1 methanol--Emailed VP they said use top lube to cut down on corrosion--Question--Is it best to add bottle of lube to the entire drum or maybe dose it when I draw it out into my 5 gal jugs right before a race? I used top lube last year seemed like it helps coat things --had zero issues with fuel / corrosion / etc   I drained system after every wk end--blew out all lines etc and used WD-40 blown through lines and added little oil to pump ---getting ready to clean all my filters etc and get everything ready---we are getting ice/snow Monday but I am in North Carolina and we will be testing in March no doubt. Thanks

I shake 1 Qt. Klotz top lube in a 55 gal drum. Most of the sprint car teams up here have been doing this for many years too. Works well.
Nothing could be easier to add except for adding nothing. ;D

When we ran the Hilborn stack system I didn't like the residue left in the nozzles (screens). Stopped using it. I blow down system and lube pump and BV after a race . All good.

Dave if you are blowing out your system I don't think you need it . I do the same thing and have never had any problems .

Agree with Bill. Not saying top lube is bad.Just you are doing the work thats needed to maintain the system and IMO top lube is waste at that point.  Guess you could call it dbl insurance.

We do the same, no top lube. Clean fuel system after every race...

For 15 years we have cleaned the fuel system, by using contact cleaner, blow-out, from the fuel tank all the way thru the nozzles, Then put oil in the pump, and put the pump and the nozzles in plastic bags until the the next race. We have never had any problems with any part of the fuel system.  But I have seen pluged nozzles with guys that don't clean their system. I've heard some racers clean with gasoline and then run the motor before they put it to sleep.
VP makes a few different Alky formulas, M-1 is pure alky and does pass NHRA fuel check.
M-3 has top oil added for sprint racers because they run their motors longer and are looking for valve stem lube, but it will not pass fuel check, as does putting WD-40 in your pump, we have failed fuel check when we used WD-40. I use Marvel Mystery oil.
M-5 is alky with some nitrate added [ nitro family] I don't know who uses M-5, maybe RC planes, but of course it will fail NHRA fuel checks.
Now if your tracks don't check fuel, and you are looking for more HP, just add 10-20% nitro, but clean your fuel system !
