Title: 1st passes, finally!
Post by: tdietz on May 13, 2013, 09:28:35 AM
After many hours of hard work, my dad and I finally got our car to the track yesterday.  Neither of us have our license, I'm planning on going for mine next week.  Car was  a dream to drive straight as an arrow!  The car is an 2001 Mark Williams that we lengthened from 140" to 175" with a 400 SBC.  (sorry guys, I know the headers and carb aren't ideal!)  I've run dirt track open wheel cars since I was 7 years old (i'm now 31) and my dad was a drag racer 30 years ago.  My parents first date was York US30 dragway.  All and all and great day until we found a caliper leaking brake fluid and put the car in the trailer.  We'll get it fixed up and try again this coming week!

Nothing like the first pass. Good luck on the license. What are you going for?

Strapping in makes it all worth while. Great job.  Good call on safety.

Glenn,

Just class 4 license.  I believe that is 7.50-9.99.  Hoping the car will run 8.30's or somewhere half close to that.  My dad said the fastest he ever went was a 9.01 and he always wanted to run in the 8's.

Coolest part of the entire day was watching my Mom on mother's day back my dad up.  I could almost turn the clock back and imagine what it was like back when they were first dating.  Really special day for my family...

one more pic, you can see my mom in the pink sweatshirt standing behind my dad when he made the very first pass in the car.

I feel the carb and headers on the car at the moment is just fine seeing you are at the track. You will get what you want on the car when you can just like a majority of us have had to do as well.
Good Job getting there,

Enjoy it.  Make your small changes as you go. It looks very cool.

Congratulations... nice story... good luck and keep us posted!

I liked the "...straight as an arrow...". My car was handful on my first pass, perhaps straight as a boomerang on crosswinds (no, NOT related to Rooman!).

Very nice. Great for you and your family. Gave me a big smile. I hope to get my slingshot on the track sometime this year, for the first time, too. I am interested in the drivers license process. Would you give a 'walk-through' after you get it ? Thanks for your story, Tommy

Tommy, not a problem.  I'll keep you posted on how it goes.  I'm hoping to have it completed Sunday.  There is a nostalgia event Memorial Day weekend that we would love to take part in.  Tim

Nice car best of luck with it . I raced at York a few times . They used to stop the races there so airplanes could land at other end .

Nothing wrong with a carb and the headers are fine with me nice ride!  How did it handle at 140 inches?

Randy, We never ran it at 140".  We bought it, stripped it and changed it before running it at that lenght.  We actually found the car on craigslist, 2001 Mark Williams that was never raced.  The car was started but never finished.  So we basically started over and lengthened it right from the start.
