Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Bushing or Needle Bearing
« on: December 31, 2020, 07:34:12 AM »
For you long glide users, do you use a bushing or needle bearing in your tailshaft in a FED? Just wondering the do's and dont's. Thanks...

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Power glide pumping fluid from vent
« on: December 20, 2019, 07:01:55 PM »
Well my cousin has a hughes glide in his racecar, never been ran. Had trans torn down by a builder to get case recert, trans guy reassembled. Started car for first time and it instantly started pumping fluid out of vent. Took back to builder and he said he put pump gasket in wrong and fixed it. Fired up car again and as I was adding fluid it started pumping out vent again so there is a problem still. I have built a few glides and never experienced this. Any ideas? He wants to take it back to builder but I think a 3rd time will not be fun. I want to tear it apart but don't really know what to look for. Any input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Roo Man's Room / Wheelie Bars
« on: September 08, 2019, 06:39:25 PM »
I have a 200" fed, 6.0 cert moly car, plan on running 7.60's or better. Want to build wheelie bars, have a few questions and would like any pictures possible. It is a three bar single wheel deal on there now but is bent badly. Would like to know what size and thickness for the bars. It is roughly 6' long on the top bars and 6 1/2' on the bottom bar. The bottom bar mounts just under the back of the seat on the bottom of the car as it sits now, top bars on rear of car. What does everyone use for height adjustment? Need all new parts and where to buy like adjuster and wheel with brackets? Finally going full steam ahead on putting car together after life getting in the way for too long. Thanks Greg.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Gear set for a powerglide
« on: January 12, 2019, 06:59:42 PM »
I am building a 200" FED that should be pretty light. It will be a all aluminum Chrysler wedge in the 1000 to 1100 HP range. It is 510 ci, 4.5" bore 4" stroke. Stack injected alky deal with 3.150 butterflies that has been a very custom deal. Dam Chrysler has no good parts. It has a 3.89 Gear with a 31x12x15 slick. I will be ordering or building a powerglide for it. What gear set would all of you recommend? I am leaning toward a 1.69 so it will not be violent on the launch. I could go 1.80 but after a lot of research and talking to people the taller gear might be a better choice. What does everyone think? Thanks for the input.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / dry sump systems
« on: October 17, 2018, 08:44:13 PM »
So I would assume there are a few members here running dry sump systems. I would like to see pics of how everyone is doing it. I just pulled the trigger on a dry sump system for a few reasons. Mainly due to my heads having terrible oil return. At this point I have invested a lot of money and want to keep it happy for many years to come. I got a Peterson 5 stage set up, 3 from the pan and one from the top end is my plan. Thanks Greg

Spud Miller's Cave / Nozzle holder air bleed holes
« on: September 07, 2018, 07:53:18 PM »
I have a question about nozzle holders and the air bleed holes in them. This is not a typical system. I have been messing around with Waterman/Mitchell injectorator systems for a while. The waterman nozzle holders have two 1/8" holes in each nozzle. Last time we ordered a nozzle holder it had no holes in it, Waterman told me they are not necessary. We ended up drilling the holes to match the rest. Well for many years we fought high idle rpm due to how much air they pull in. It is a throttle body deal with accelerator pumps so you can run the idle lean and have no stumble. Well a few years ago I taped them off for an idle only test. Low and behold we could adjust throttle body and make idle speed below 2k rpm. Well my father has the same system on his engine and I talked him into plugging the holes. Now the idle circuit is much easier to tune in my mind. It was tough to not be very lean on the idle circuit before, now is much more adjustable. The question I have is now I have been told in a N/A engine the holes are there to atomize the fuel delivery better. Is it really that important or can we just run the system as it is? At one point we had a mix of nitro that was told to be 10% but the crackle it had made me think it was more, the problem I had was I could not give the motor enough fuel at idle to keep the lean chirping to go away. Nitro guys will understand. I have not put the same mix back in the motor but I think it would be much happier with the plugged nozzles. So do we need the holes or can they stay plugged? The nitro deal was just fun but maybe try it again someday when the tune up is figured out. Sorry for the long post but I would like everyone's opinion of what is right and wrong. Thank you Greg S.

Roo Man's Room / Wheel speed
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:49:44 PM »
Hi rooman, I saw a couple of your builds at the march meet. Very nice builds in the top fuel class. The question I have is air pressure vs wheel speed and wheelie bar height. There is quite a  controversial conversation about wheel speed vs wheelie bar topic between quite a few people at the track. I have been told the lower the tire pressure the faster the wheel speed and this weekend I was told I was wrong, I am interested In your input on this topic. maybe I am way out of line but I am talking about a 7.0 to 7.6 fed deal. What is your input on this topic? I have always found lower pressure gets you up on the slick faster but am I wrong? I am by all means not a pro and I would like to be schooled on this topic. Thanks

Roo Man's Room / Steering
« on: February 15, 2018, 09:10:37 PM »
Hi Rooman, can you please post a couple pics of how you do steering mounts down the side of the chassis? Do you use Teflon to make the tube slide better? I would like to cut off all my brackets and make it better. Maybe I am being too pikey but would like to get rid of the metal to metal deal. I hope this makes sense. Thank you as for finally after 2.5 years I might be getting my KB block to finally mock everything up. I will post pics as all comes along.
Thanks Greg S.

Spud Miller's Cave / bad fuel?
« on: August 29, 2017, 12:29:06 PM »
Maybe a dumb question but I want to know if alky with a 10% load of nitro will stay good in plastic jugs for a few years out of the sun in a hot trailer? And yes sealed. Thanks
