Title: Max hp with 1.82 gear set?
Post by: Mister_Fitz on September 19, 2016, 12:24:26 PM
I'm running a FED with a 350" sbc and a shorty PG.
The planetary is a standard stampeld steel with 1.82 helical gears. FED is about 1400 punds. Best 60' is 1.21 sec. Best 1/4 is 8.26 sec.
How much more will it take? Is it time to change to a straight cut gear set?

I honestly think you are just about there . Some of the Comp guys run that carrier with the straight cut gears because it is lighter than the the 1.76 carrier . I just switched mine over from the 1.80 to a 1.69 low and the car seems to like it a little better .

I agree I think you are pushing the limits of a 1.82. I have changed customers from 1.82 to a 1.76 with little or no difference in 60ft times. For no more that it would cost to switch I would make the move if/when you break the 1.82

In my six cylinder S/P altered (1.19 sixty, 5.60, 9.00) I saw little performance difference in the 1.82 vs 1.76 ratios. But 1.82s are easily obtainable cheap. I TIG the ends of the six planetary spud shafts to the case with bronze rod to significantly increase the rigidity of the assembly.
