Title: Re-Tire
Post by: PRO-MOTIONRACING on November 11, 2016, 05:08:20 PM
So, here is my next question. Tires, same car, 125" Funny Car now an altered, BBC/PG on gas, looking at 8:50 and/or Super Comp. They have 17x33x15 on 15x15 rims on this thing and I need new rims anyway. I am thinking about 14x32 on 12" rims so they will fit my door car also. any suggestions ?

Thanks, 50-R

Door cars with suspension require different tire construction then a solid chassis car where the suspension is built into the tire. Now weather this will affect a 8.50 car or not IDK, but my opinion is that 17" tire is a tad big for what you are going to run

That's what I was thinking. I was reading some older threads and it looks like the FED guys are running much smaller tires? I was wondering about the benefits to a smaller or bigger tire. I know bigger takes more power to pull but what about handling? vs traction? I actually prefer the narrow tire look but how small is to small?

Thanks again, 50-R

Dragsters prefer a narrower tire than an altered

50-R what is the size of your BBC, blown on gas ?? trying to get an idea what HP you are making.
I agree the 17x33 on 15 wide rims looks like it's too much.
Your converter choice will have a big effect on what tires/ wheels you will want.
Need more info,

I helped a couple of Comp Elim teams race the NHRA World Finals this last week-end and talked to a couple of tire guys about your Gas BBC FC chassis.
We agree if you are making under 800-900 HP, a 33x12x15 tire on a 12" wide wheel would be about right. If you are over 1000 hp then you could use your 15" wide rims but go to a GY 33x14.5x15 , that is what a Comp champion A/AP 27 "T" on a chassis close to a FC is running with his Gray Motorsport Pro Stock 1400 hp motor with a 3 speed. And he runs 6.60's at over 200 mph.
You posted a reply while I posted a response, so with 600 hp & a 5000 stall converter, you might try a 31x12x15 Goodyear [ weighs 26 lbs] that I run on my injected SBC alky burning Jrfueler, or the 33x12x15 GY I at 1'st suggested. And you might want to call A-1 converters 360-574-9966, to get your converter updated to your motor combo, so your motor will be allowed to run in the RPM range it wants to. I.E don't run a converter that stalls at 5000, when the motor/cam comes on at 6000.
