Front Engine Dragsters / Re: new guy intro with old fed
« on: February 07, 2013, 07:02:54 AM »
Good story on Granada Hills.  I'm using a metal rod.  I like the looks better than a cable.  There's options to turning your carb around, I'll take a picture of one option and send it to you at lunchtime.

Tommy - you'll be astonished how many times you have to put the engine/trans in and take it out again.  After a few months, you could do it easily with the lights off.  I had picked up a bare unfinished chassis in 2009.  Greg, the local nhra sfi chassis cert guy come by to check it out.  If it wouldn't certify, it was just going to be a wall hanger.  He looked at it and guessed it to be early '80s vintage.  There was a 1/2 inch u-joint steering coupler tacked in.  He pulled the dust cover back and read the serial number.  I think the number ended in a -80.  Greg said there you go "1980."  We all try to know as much history about our car (if we didn't build it new) plus it fun to know when you talk about it.  My first dragster's home track was Lions, "Flathead Obsession" I'm the second owner.  Did you ever see it run at the Beach?

rd -  96" wb.......  that'll be exciting launch.

Exactly right.  You receive an A+ for todays pop quiz, plus extra credit for having a tempest engine.  Can't sneak anything by you : )

Twin turbos, sounds good.  I like Pontiacs too.  My dad had two new Pontiac station wagons, a dark blue '65 catalina and a '70 bonneville, green metallic with fake wood grain sides.  My mom had a new gold 1967 lemans 326.  Wish I had those cars back.   Here's pictures, guess what engine...

I have a friend who cut a small square hole in his first trailer so his parachute and mount stuck out.  Us drag racers always figure out a solution.
For me, I like the old style open trailer.

Worm chassis's have nice lines.  Neat detail how he keeps the top rail by engine a little lower.

Your shop's roomy.  Good idea how you have your panels out of harms way.  Looks like new 60s style paint scheme, tastefully done.  My shop is a two car garage.  It's tough to work in there, takes more effort and planning, but no doubt it's cozy.  I have my whole driveway too, plus all my neighbors help me when needed, which I think they enjoy doing stuff as much as me.

Blind Mule - after seeing a picture of an early dragster with 2 flathead engines, I thought it would be fun to put one together.  Best part is all the junk I had been collecting over the years, now it has purpose as opposed to just cluttering up the garage......

Hi.  My name is Alan.  I've been visiting this website for a few years.
Here's picture of my first dragster, it's a Speed Improvement chassis
from 1960.  These were sold by a company in Long Beach.  I got this
from original owner/builder exactly 13 years ago and got it running
with his backup flathead after it had set with a blown motor for many
years.  His name was Mark Hopkins, and his two friends helping him
with the car was Poncho Beal and Dave Hollingshead.  Lions Drag Strip
"the Beach" was it's home track.  It has been sitting for awhile.  Here
is a picture of another dragster (I know, engine in the wrong location)
that I have been working on since January 2011.  It started as a set
of rails, alot of it just tacked together.  I got it in California in 2009.  If
you were at the LA Roadsters Father Day Show, maybe you saw it for
sale in the swap meet area.  It's also flathead powered.

On another note, last year I ordered magneto coils, magneto wires,
magneto clamps from Spud-FIE.  If you have Mallory Magneto questions
he has answers, correct ones.  Thank you for this website.
