Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Rod - cam clearance sbc…

Not sure if they will hit with a small base circle . I know mine would hit with a large base circle with a 3.625 stroke . I had the rods cam clearanced at MGP . The best thing you can do is dummy assemble it and check . Try advancing the cam till it hits then try retarding it . If it will go a few degrees either way without hitting you will be fine . On my new motor I am going to use a Honda rod to give myself a little more room !

Been having big trouble with my sons Pro charged big block ! could not get more than 6 runs out of a high gear without burning it up ! He went to a ringless shaft big pump and 10 clutches ! Also a new BTE valve body ! We will see how that works out !

If it was an un blown car I would say 5 or 6 would be fine but in your case I would go to the 8 clutch pack ! It seems that blower cars are a little harder on clutches ! Also as some one said you might want to step up on your pump pressure a little with a heavier relief spring in the valve body !

Before you get to ordering parts you might want to see if an alluminum rod will swing with that big stroke ! Another thing to check is cam to rod clearance ! On my motor with a 3.625 stroke and a large base circle cam I had to cam clearance the rods and that is with a 2.0 rod journal ! It might be a good idea to talk to an engine builder that puts these combo's together before you spend a lot of money on parts ! Are you going to run a blower ?

In it's stock form the 200 is not really a good trans ! Some of the Comp guys are using them behind a 4 cyl engine but with a lot of expensive parts ! A glide is still the cheapest way to go !

I think the only way to solve it is to add some weight to the front end ! I use my wheelie bar but I run a soft side wall slick and have my bar hit when the tire squats ! If you mess around with your rpm at the hit it's going to mess with your reaction times !

« on: April 03, 2021, 12:43:41 PM »
If you have a small cc head you should still be able to get at least 11 to 1 out of it ! When I started messing around with 20 percent nitro I went to a flat top piston to drop compression down ! To my surprise it really didn't slow down much on straight alcohol ! The best it ever ran on the higher compression straight alky was 7.24 and with the lower compression straight alky 7.32 ! If you need to make a little more power just put a little nitro 10 to 15 percent and that will wake it up !
How much of a compression change and from how high of compression? Just interested, thanks
With the high compression it was 13.8 now down to 12 to 1 !

Sounds like you might be better off changing the chassis and that way you can use any tire you want !My 33inch M+H tire has only 99 3/4 roll out and I don't think that would help all that much !

Chris I have been running that 12x33 M+H on my car and have had great luck with them ! They are heavier than the Good Year 30 lbs but have been quicker for me in the 60 ft ! I will measure the roll out today and let you know what it is !

Chris I use the Rons primer plus on mine ! It's a 2 4 barrel setup and uses 2 .035 jets ! It also has an adjustable needle valve to fine tune it !

Before you go and do that it might be a good idea to talk to one of the major builders ! I have rebuilt a lot of powerglides and have never seen a long tailshaft one without a stock support or an aftermarket one with a bushing or bearing !As Chris mentioned TSR racing products 1 800 394 5889 sells a book on powerglide racing transmissions ! They are also a good source for parts and information !Not knowing what you have as far as HP and ET you want to run makes it hard to give you any ideas on what to do ! If you are not making huge HP using a 6 cyl planetary 1.80 ratio will save you a few lbs of rotating weight over a v8 1.76 ! Another low cost weight reduction would be a lightened ring gear in your rear end ! That can save you another few lbs of rotating weight ! I hope this helps you and keep us posted on your progress !
