Jon's Wheel House / Tire growth
« on: March 27, 2022, 08:50:55 AM »
Question for Jon ! I am using Th M+ H 12X33 Tire and trying to figure out how much they grow at 185 mph . The tire measures 100 inches at 5 lbs air ! Trying to figure out what gear to put in . I am thinking a 5.00 or a 4.86 ! Not really afraid of rpm this new combination is a 15 degree head rolled over to 11 degrees  and flow much better than my old 18 degree heads  ! Thanks bill !

Spud Miller's Cave / Not seeing any gains !
« on: October 28, 2019, 01:05:34 PM »
A little disappointed in the performance of my car this year ! After getting my tire problems straightened out I thought I could get my car to run in the six's ! Went from 15 percent to 20 and then 25 and no real gains at all ! Plugs look great and the motor seems happy ! The car runs the same MPH on nitro as it dose on straight alky ! It seems like the motor is falling off at 9400 and it used to pull good to 9700 ! Valve springs are fine ! I still have the same gear and converter that I used on alky and the converter is on the loose side it stalls at 8200 ! Wondering if a tighter converter would help! Just kind of lost and looking for some advice !

Spud Miller's Cave / Torque vs stall speed
« on: September 26, 2019, 03:02:01 PM »
Thinking about a converter change ! The converter I am running right now is very loose 8200 stall on alky and it was ok when we were running 10 percent ! Using Spuds torque chart at 10 percent the motor picks up about 36 ft lbs but at 25 percent that we are going to run it picks up 94 ft lbs ! I have my nitrous converter that stalls at 6800 and I am thinking if I would be better off with the tighter converter !

Well I tried a set of the Mickeys on my car and I am not impressed at all with them ! having trouble with wheel speed and the do not squat at the hit ! Tried leaving about 4000 and they dead hook went up to 5200 and it was a little better but not great ! Going to try to leave higher and lower the pressure from 5 to 5 1/5 lbs . Jon what's your take on this !

Spud Miller's Cave / Main jet and nozzle size
« on: May 11, 2019, 01:21:01 PM »
Is there a formula to use when going to a bigger nozzle ? right now I am running a .037 nozzle with an .88 main jet . If I go to a .040 nozzle is there some sort of formula to figure out what size main to use just to get it close to the same ?

Spud Miller's Cave / Time for some changes
« on: December 01, 2018, 08:20:56 AM »
If I am going to make this change over to small percentage work I need to make some changes to my motor ! I am replacing my pistons so I might as well get the right parts ! I had 14.5 compression and my plan is to run about 30 percent so I am thinking about 12.5 ? I used .043 top and second rings with a total seal gapless top ring ! I also had gas ported pistons ! Bad idea ? Never had a bad plug reading but I did lift a ring land on one piston ! i put athicker head gasket on it and I think that may have led to the ring land lifting  my total deck was .072 ! I will go back to the .041 gasket !I am crossing the finish line at 9600 rpm so I think a gear change will help too ! Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks Bill

Spud Miller's Cave / Cranking compression and nitro
« on: May 29, 2018, 01:27:51 PM »
Speaking about cranking compression I am wondering what others have with injected nitro ? I retarded my cam and went from 225 to 190 and the next step is to tighten up on my lash but I don't know what is too high or low !

Spud Miller's Cave / A little nitro results
« on: September 26, 2017, 12:30:53 PM »
Went to Epping on Sunday to try again with the small 12 percent nitro mix ! I put my loose converter in and raised my shift to 9200 . First pass went a 7.16 at 185.79 fastest motor pass ever for the car ! Second run 7.15 at 185.77 ! For the first round we went up 1 percent more and went 7.11 at 186.02 ! Second round another 7.11 at 185.77 ! I am very pleased with the performance gain with the 13 percent mix ! A full 3 MPH and solid .1 over the M5 methanol and the M5 was a .1 better than M1 ! I must admit that I was afraid to try it but now that I did I am much more confident in doing so . The best advice I can offer at this time is to be very careful in the beginning ! We started small at 9 percent and 10 percent richer and only ran to the eighth . We pull the plugs all eight every run ! Take baby steps and if something seems wrong it most likely is ! Buy a hydrometer it is much easier to monitor your percentage !

Spud Miller's Cave / A little nitro advice ?
« on: September 07, 2017, 07:08:04 AM »
Ready to try a little nitro next weekend and I have a few questions . It is injected alky and runs very well as it is but I would like a little more . My compression is 14.5 but I run a large cam 280 on the intake and 294 on the exhaust with a lobe center of 114 . I have figured out the dynamic compression and it is 10.78 . Normally run 34 degrees timing and an 86 main jet . It normally crosses at 9400 so I changed the rear gear from 4.86 to a 4.56 . I would like to start at 15 pecent ! I launch off a 2 step is this ok ? I plan on going richer by 10 percent is this ok ? I bought a hydrometer kit so I can mix the fuel the correct way . Any thoughts or suggestions ! Thanks Bill
