Spud Miller's Cave / 22 amp MSD conversion [from C.T. 12 amp]
« on: October 29, 2016, 07:32:54 PM »
Spud, I help with a FED Dragster. Good 427 engine with a SSI  Std Helix 6-71. The pump is the mandated Waterman 19.2 gal max pump [actually not legal per NHRA Tester in Caif.] Flows a little over 20 gpm per his test. When run with the above named 22 amp mag-NO Hi Speed. The Engine does not perform as well [drops cyls on top end]as it does with the large Enderle Pump. That pump we know is weak@ best. My question is, Do we have enough Mag/Coil for this much pump? Fuel pressure @ nozzels is up around 160 PSI I come from the old days when we ran 2.5 amp Vertex mags with a 12 gal Crower pump. Thanks Al

Then cleared for a 4.5 stroke. 3 middle Steel 4 bolt caps [#2-3-4] front and rear are GM stock 2 bolt caps. Then line bored and line hone-Oil pump on #5 cap with a stud. Block was BHJ d on decks to 9.785 and the end rails -.060 F and R. The cyls were bored +065 and plate honed to 4.320 [+.0005/-.0000] Using ARP Bolts and a Cometic Gasket. This was to be a Street Engine, but I got stuck with it. There is a new set of ARP main cap bolts included. Block is in Northeast Ohio. Selling price is 750.00

Spud Miller's Cave / down nozzle set of 8 pcs
« on: May 09, 2016, 11:38:50 AM »
Thought it would be easier on here. Have a set of 8 nozzles that were in a set of Brodix 12X12 heads [These appear to be a set of -12s that Brodix rolled to 12 deg-not made any more] The nozzles that were in the heads were Kinsler 580s. According to them, they are NOT worth trying to test and/or reflow. They said they were TWISTED from over tightening in the heads. What do you have that would be a replacement for these nozzles? Or is someone feeding me a line? We have 2 pumps that are flow tested and are Said to be GOOD pumps. Both are K-W s.One is a 500 and other is a 400. The engine is an all Alum 410 in a pavement Sprint Car.Thanks Al

Spud Miller's Cave / VP M-5 use
« on: February 23, 2016, 03:40:34 PM »
Does anyone here have real experience with the change-over from straight Methanol to M-5. Jet changes[ with a carb] and timing changes. Do you need a gear change to keep the engine loaded, like on real Nitro.

Front Engine Dragsters / Jim Minnick AA/GD-The Nitro Gasser
« on: January 25, 2016, 04:39:42 PM »
Does anyone have knowledge of the current wearabouts of the last car he raced-thru 1969 season. It was a ROD Stucky Chassis and a late model 426 hemi. I used to work for Jim and lost track of the car years ago. He raced Pro-Stock in the early days of the class. Jim had  passed on a number of yrs ago. There was a person on Race Junk a while back that said he was making Replica frames. Dont know what he was working off. I last saw it in Jim s garage in Cross Lanes W.Va. Decades ago. He may have sold it prior to his divorce from his first wife Gloria. They had 2 daughters-both grown and living in FLA. Thanks for any help. Al

Spud Miller's Cave / low percentage nitro/alky mix to be used with a CARB
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:43:47 PM »
I realize this is mostly an FI site, however I need to run 10-15 percent nitro/alky mix to keep up with the Jonses Dont know if the engine will tolerate a higher % mix]. If the carb is jetted correctly for 100% alky, Would you lean/SMALLER main Jet for the 15% mix. I ask this based on your article on low % nitro in a FI system. This is a small engine that uses a float chamber/float bowl below the main jet. The fuel is drawn UP thru the jet via an E-tube that protrudes into the carb Venturi, thus drawing the fuel into the air flow stream. Any suggestions are appreciated. I will run this engine on a Dyno first. I cant measure an air into the engine, but I can Measure EGT and record. On 100% alky, I try to run a Max EGT of 1080-1140 deg. F Thanks Al

Spud Miller's Cave / Old Mags from the 60s
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:49:53 PM »
Have looked @ many OLD vintage mags from the 60s. They all seem to have some sort of additional rectangular addition on the rear of the main body. Cant tell if they were made that way or that was an addition put onto an existing mag. What was inside that area of the mag and what was its purpose?

Spud Miller's Cave / Low percentage of Nitro with Carb
« on: October 16, 2015, 10:11:26 AM »
Like others, Need a little extra power. Running pure methanol thru an Alky Specific Carb. Currently the Carb is set-up to run on the rich side. Only want to run approx max of 10 % . Due to components in Engine. Biggest factor being the CAST Hyper pistons and the PM rods. Have access to nitro and have a FIE hydrometer set-up. Thanks

Have a hilborn O pump that is cam driven [1/2 engine speed] This will feed 100% methanol to a 4bbl 750 cfm Willies carb. We know this will require some type of a bypass system or device to keep the fuel pressure @ idle thru 6000 rpm [max engine speed as dictated by MSD rev limiter] to a max of 7.5 psi. These are crate 604 GM engines that produce a max of 325 hp on Methanol. My question is what system or device to use? If a Main  jet can type device is suggested-What size pill to use [@ least to start with] and what spring to use ? If other than std spring. If a regulator-by pass style is suggested, What style/brand do you suggest. Thanks in advance for your help. Al

Spud Miller's Cave / 30% with stack injection

Building a BBC approx 500 cu-in. Alum heads 360 int. runners and a Hilborn 3 in 3pc manifold inside nozzles. Have a 7 amp big cap Mallory that you did. With 30% as a starting point and probably not exceeding 50% due to components in short block. 2 questions: 1 what size pump do I need so as to NOT have to change when upping the percentage [ie Hilb/Waterman/Enderle]and what nozzle would be a good size to start @ 30/35%  2 What C/R do you suggest ? I dont intend to run pure methanol. I dont have pistons yet. Thanks Al

Looking for a used - but not abused 3 disk clutch for FED. BBC 6-71 85% car. Now has Hayes with the sheet metal style cover and 6 arms. It no longer locks up as I believe it deflects the cover-no matter how much C/W is put on and the discs also wear heavily run to run. Do you have anything better, that wont break the bank. 11 in discs now. Thanks Al

Spud Miller's Cave / fuel pressure low vs tune-up calculator
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:55:35 AM »
REAR FUEL TANK, about 6ft behind pump. Waterman 400 pump @ 50 percent of crank speed [GOOD flow test less than 7 percent fall off/internal leak between 50 and 100 PSI]. Hilborn 2 3/16 injector with #54 spool. Nozzels K385 s[.024] or 410 s Fuel pressure from tune-up shows approx 140 lbs[@8000] @ 75 deg. and 2500 ft. used 103 perccent VE. There is no filter between tank/pump/#12 line. fuel is pulled approx 18 ins uphill to pump. There is a K filter-new element[not inst d backwards] between the pump and barrel valve. MAX press @ 7000RPM is 78 lbs on your telltale nozzle set-up. My cals show approx 120 lbs @ 7000 RPM. Any Ideas? I suspect the rear mount tank? and the accel factor? NO fuel leaks but have not checked for vac or collapse of -12 line. Thanks Al
