Title: Wooden grips ?
Post by: PSweeney on February 20, 2014, 02:53:40 AM
anybody make their own wooden grips for brake hangle and butterfly wheels ?  I plan on using a high quality birch plywood but I 'm questining how to attach them ?.   I know items like wooden steering wheels are riveted with brass rivets but I'm unfamiliar with the process or where to source them ?.  I'm thinking a coutnersunk brass slotted machine screw might work ?

true value hard ware makes a aluminium screw together fitting that looks like a rivet with a male and female end ,I have used them on several wheels. I don't recall the name one side has a blank head like a rivet the other has a screw slut they are in with the bins of bolts and hardware.

They are known as "sex" bolts. We used then at JFR to attach the rub strips to the bottom of the front body lip. We counterbored the bottom surface of the UHMW rub strip and put the slotted half on the bottom so that on the readily visible top surface all that showed was the smooth end.

I make the wheels and brake handles and the wood grips for both.

I have a source for exotic wood and then I also do the laminates, what you see in the lams is "purple heart" and "Walnut".  The plain grips what you see are "lepard (checkerd)wood" "Tulip (red streaked)wood" , plain "Maple"(stainable) and "Mahogany"
