Post by: Blind Mule on February 08, 2013, 04:46:49 PM
What is legal as far as powdercoat and what about chrome? I know some of the coatings get frowned on :-\

I bet Rooman will jump in with the correct answer, but I think part of it has to do with what chassis cert you are looking for.
If I am not mistaken you can cert a 7.50 car with powder coat, but not TF and I doubt advanced ET.  I will dig up my book and look
Not sure about chrome on any part of the driver cockpit part.

Powder coat is not mentioned, my frame is powder coated. The rules are not clear on powder coat (not mentioned at all) a lot of people do not like it as they think that cracks will be hidden by powder coat, that is not my opinion (powder crack also). I think cracks show up better (I powder coat as a sidelline)

These are the rules SECTION 4B - ADVANCED E.T.
ROLL CAGE
The following SFI Chassis Specs are effective for all new chassis
and for all current chassis at next recertification: full-bodied cars
must meet SFI Spec 25.1E, 25.2, or 25.3; Funny Cars and openbodied
altered cars must meet SFI Spec 10.1E or 10.2. All frontengine
dragsters must meet SFI Spec 2.2B or 2.4B. All rear-engine
dragsters must meet SFI Spec 2.1 or 2.5B. Chassis must be
recertified every three years by NHRA and have a serialized sticker
affixed to cage before participation. Plating of chassis prohibited on
any vehicle manufactured after Jan. 1, 1999; painting permitted
.
See General Regulations 4:1.

cage before participation. Current three-year certification will be

Just a question why would anyone want to hide cracks in a chassis your butts going to be running 150 or 200 mph in.

Its not they want to hide the cracks, its just that it will hide the cracks. You would want to inspect it through the year as you race it.

YOU DONT WANT TO POWDER COAT A RACE CHASSIS, ALL YOU NEED IS PREFERABLY TRANS FLUID ON BARE METAL OR AT THE MOST 1 LIGHT COAT OF LAQUER PAINT WITH NO PRIMER. YOU NEED TO INSPECT THE CHASSIS AFTER EACH WEEKEND RACE FOR CRACKS TO BE SAFE. THATS WHY PROF TEAMS DONT COVER THERE CHASSIS.
