Front Engine Dragsters / Re: which rear gear?
« on: July 20, 2022, 11:49:46 AM »
Sorry, I'm just fascinated at anyone leaving at 9200 rpm. My pontiac powered fed blows the tires off at 6000 rpm launch. I'm at 4600 rpm now.

I got hung out a couple Saturdays ago for over an hour all strapped in at 90 plus degrees. My umbrella helped a lot. The good news is that I think my claustrophobia (while strapped in and engine off) is gone!   :-\

I would check the chassis for cracks first. Sounds like a lot of flex.

Front Engine Dragsters / slip yoke and u-joint
« on: January 14, 2020, 09:06:09 PM »
I bought my FED with a shorty powerglide and a '63 Pontiac/Olds differential installed. Between the two are the drive shaft style slip yoke from the trans and a u-joint bolted to the diff pinion u-joint flange. It has a 3/16" steel 2 piece cover around everything that's bolted together with 4 bolts, and held in position by a mount extended back from the transmission mount holes. I also added a 1 inch wide steel band that's bolted around the cover, (just in case). I believe this is how this 1969 FED was originally engineered. We plan to put about 850 HP through this. Does this setup sound adequate? So far we got it to run 8.32 with a 1.15 60 foot. I window'd the block at about 1100-1200 feet. The new engine should be stronger than the old one by about 100 hp.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: GOT MY LICENSE...FINALLY

We went back up this past weekend, added 30 more pounds of ballast to the front of the FED, reduced the rear tire pressure to 6.5, and went 5.65 @ 125 mph (1/8th of course). So those changes gave us more than 2 tenths! 2 more tenths will get us where we need to be and possibly run NE2 at some point in the future! Now the downside... Metal in the oil.  :(

Jon Hansen, I have 31 x 12 x 15 Goodyears on it, and we were running them with 9 psi. Sounds like to much pressure. I DO have two more 15 pound weights for the front.

Thanks for the info guys! Yes, it has a parachute on it. One other thing (of many) I need to figure out is this: I finally obtained a good quality video of the launch and it appears to be on and off the wheelie bar about 5 times! The wheel is about 2" off the ground before the launch right now and I'm leaving on the trans brake at about 4000 rpm. Is 9 psi too much for the rear slicks? Any other ideas?

We are running 9 psi in the rear and 50 up front.

Thanks, guys. We got it to go 5.86@123 mph in the eighth. Next time up we will step it up a little. How do you guys handle the bounce after the stripe? I had to let off the brake and reapply a couple times to make it stop bouncing, but I'm pretty sure it was airborne a few times.

Front Engine Dragsters / GOT MY LICENSE...FINALLY

After two years of hurdles and setbacks, my brother Mike, my son Andrew and a long time friend Tom helped me get my NHRA competition license passes completed this past Saturday! Huge respect for all you guys that are faster (almost all of you are) than mine. My adrenaline is just now getting back to normal! :)

You guys are the greatest source of info! Thank you. What type of temperature sensor is used with no water?

I use electric gauge that has a sensor tapped into head.Would think you can do same in block.Does not require being in water jacket are, I also had 4 sensor working on same gauge using 2 3 position switches. I read oil, trans ,left and right head temps. Hardest part is remembering which switch in what position reads what. label printers where made for old guys.LOL

This car is injected alky, no blower. Where can I find those temp sensors that work on the block or heads without water? What brand are they?

No data recorder, and so far the plugs look slightly on the rich side.
