Spud Miller's Cave / Re: measuring nitro percentage
« on: February 23, 2021, 05:01:02 PM »
I believe the Surfers secret was Toluene/Nitro to make it live. I usually have mine mixed a day or two before a race to let the endothermic reaction settle down and then check it. I put my jugs in the sun and will maybe check it for peace of mind. I rarely change a pill on a weekend race, occasionally add or takeaway a couple of degrees timing. Usually the weather/temp don’t change enough to warrant a pill change with nitro, now the driver is a different thing...very unpredictable.

Have you tried to heat a 30% load to like 90 degrees and check then put the same load in the freezer to see any change in the proofing hydrometer readings?

Are they percentages verified by a hydrometer? Is there something to compensate for temperature on the proofing hydrometer?

I use a bushing. Same bushing and seal for over 10 years. No leaks, no issues.

Yes the case has a bushing, I believe the only purpose for the gov. Support bushing is the load from the rear pump if it has one and the weight of the governor. They utilize the bushing/bearing for a shorty output shaft kit to support that end of the shaft. I always use the bushing thinking it limits flex in the shaft but machine the gov slip ring portion off if you’re weight conscious. Don’t see why it could not be deleted though just never done it.

I have found a big difference in flex plates where they stamp the crank flange in both depth and squareness to the ring gear. The cheaper the flex plate the more lax on quality control, it seems to me. I have had good results/consistency from TCI and B&M. You can buy flex plate to crank shims to move the flex plate away from the motor plate and toward the converter. I believe Speedway sells them but I have never used them.

Do you have a manufacturer or part number of what you're using?
Thanks

Paid the same. The purchase was very much like a drug deal , go way down this alley, cash only, no receipts and I've never seen you before. Addiction takes you places you never thought you'd go.

This is the label on the barrel I bought last year

Mine takes about an hour for 12 quarts

What do the plugs look like?

Seems like you were using a higher voltage battery like 16V? If you increase the voltage you will increase the current draw( ohms law: E=IxR) you could put say a 1 ohm resistor in series with the solenoid which would decrease the amperage to around 8 amps , not the 1.5 A solenoid but may be useable. Just verify that the solenoid opens because the magnetism will decrease.

How many amps does the present solenoid draw? What do you consider low amperage?

I believe Spud Miller is still using one on his injected nitro SBC. I've been using the same one one my injected (less) nitro BBC for 10 years. No issues with me.
