Spud Miller's Cave / Nitro and engine size
« on: January 14, 2014, 05:34:56 PM »
Hi Spud,
Does nitro have a preference in bore/stroke combinations? 4" stroke vs. 4.25" , shorter stroke/bigger bore, longer stroke/smaller bore, does size matter?

Thanks

What is a good piston ring set for a NA BBC on nitromethane?

Spud Miller's Cave / Toluene Amount
« on: November 26, 2013, 08:14:25 PM »
Hi Spud,
Is there a formula for the amount of toluene to add as the % of nitro changes?

Thanks

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Short block rotational torque

What would be a ballpark rotational torque value for a fresh cast piston, cast ring rotating assembly for a v-8. Specifically a 351W Ford.

Thanks

I'm running the same Hoosier on a 10" wheel/Injected BBC, 3.89 gears and leave at 5,000. 60' is 1.19-1.2

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Copper Head Gaskets
« on: September 21, 2013, 11:25:10 AM »
Is there a copper head gasket that is better than the rest. I don't need the ability to seal water passages because I run my BBC dry.
Thanks

Front Engine Dragsters / Rear wheel width on a FED
« on: September 11, 2013, 11:06:11 AM »
Is there any advantage in changing from a 10" wide wheel to a 12" wide wheel? I'm currently running  a 33x12 Hoosier on a 10" wheel and need to replace the wheels.

Thanks

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: Main Bearing Issues
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:20:36 PM »
My original thought was the block. The first block was a 2 bolt block with main studs and filled, This last set of bearings (#1)is with the rotating assembly in a 4 bolts block with main studs and filled. The upper 2(#3&#4) were from a 2 bolt block. If it was oiling I would think the rod bearings should show damage? Rod bearing clearance is .003". I have two of the engines, they are almost identical short blocks with the exception of crank brands and the other has had no issues. Both were balanced by the same place. This engine had 34' timing with a fat tuneup.
Thanks

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Main Bearing Issues
« on: May 26, 2013, 09:23:10 PM »
These main bearings came out of my 467 BBC, injected, methanol, FED at 8.20's / powerglide. #3 and #4 sets came out of same rotating assembly as #1 did but #1 (1 pass) was in a 4 bolt block. #3/#4( 3 passes/4 passes) were in a previous 2 bolt block. Main bearing clearance was .0035". Rod bearing were good. The GM steel crank came out of a running engine and the bearings were very good. I used different rods, pistons, etc and had the assembly balanced. Balanced wrong??

Thanks. I'm considering a cam/head change on my spare short block.

Are there limits to how much you can add or subtract, primarily to the piston weight, after it has been balanced without rebalancing? Example: cut valve reliefs deeper on a bbc @ 7,000 rpm?

Spud Miller's Cave / Taller gears for nitro?
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:41:22 PM »
Hi Spud,
This is not directly about fuel but related. My question is about gear ratio. I will be setting up with methanol and then switching to nitro. Should not take too many passes for this. I ran 4.10's last year but have 3.89's . It seems like your progression has been taller as you added more juice. Will 25% be that sensitive to more load?
(FED/BBC 466 Stack Hilborn  33x12 tires)
Thanks
