Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / looking for a machinist
« on: May 25, 2017, 02:14:20 PM »
Can anyone here recommend a good machinist in the Va, Nc. east Tn. area. I'm looking for a shop that does good work somewhere as close to the I-77 I-81 corridor as possible. Anyone here have a good suggestion? My new motor has been sitting untouched at a local shop since Feb.

Spud Miller's Cave / hilborn 150-1 pump plumbing?
« on: May 20, 2017, 04:24:51 AM »
What size feed line do I need for a -1 hilborn pump, feeding a BBC methanol with stack injection? Is a -10 big enough or does it need a -12 or something bigger?

Front Engine Dragsters / Anyone here know of Bob Weimer from Il.?
« on: May 11, 2017, 03:07:02 PM »
Just got my info from Hilborn on my BBC injector. Seems it was originally set up for Nitro and shipped to a Bob Weimer of Weimer machine in Berwyn Il in Early march of 1968. I was just curious if any one knew him and what kind of car it was originally ran on. Pics would be awesome

Front Engine Dragsters / cooling question
« on: May 07, 2017, 08:30:24 AM »
I have a question for those that are running a flat mounted radiator, I have a bc in my dragster with the radiator laid flat in the chassis. It currently has a csr pump on the motor with -16 lines. It will circulate water fine after bleeding the air out, but if the system gets the slightest bit low, like as little as a pint low the pump quits moving water. What are you guys that run a radiator using for a water pump?

Front Engine Dragsters / Finally made it to the track today
« on: March 19, 2017, 05:29:47 PM »
We went down to Piedmont dragway today for a little test and tune. Managed to hurt the engine, but while I have had better weekends at the track I did get my chassis certified today.

Spud Miller's Cave / CFM of hilborn injection
« on: February 26, 2017, 03:05:50 PM »
Almost finished gathering parts to put a real engine together for my car. I have picked up a hilborn stack injector for BBC, 2 7/16 butterflys, and I was curious as to how much air it is capable of moving. Anyone know the CFM of these units? Numbers per runner? Going on a 604" with heads that are doing 410 cfm at .700 lift

Front Engine Dragsters / price to chrome steering parts
« on: January 27, 2017, 04:52:08 PM »
Just curious if anyone has had their axle and steering rods chromed lately and what the cost was. I have a local shop that does the spectra chrome process and their work looks great, but I'm not sure how long it holds up. But also not sure how much more real chrome would cost. Might be willing to give it a try if there is a major price difference. Thoughts?

Spud Miller's Cave / bbc pump
« on: December 11, 2016, 05:15:06 AM »
I just picked up a used hilborn stack injection manifold for a bbc. It's a 2 7/16 butterfly model, currently setup for gas. Planning to send it out to be swapped over to methanol. My question is, what size pump will I need for that? Also what other pieces do I need, besides a fuel shutoff? As of now it's just the manifold with nozzles, hoses and barrel valve.

Wanted to sell / front wheels
« on: December 04, 2016, 12:58:23 PM »
I came into a nice pair of vintage front spoke wheels, that are supposed to be from one of Jeb Allen's early rear engine cars. I bought brand new ones when I started on my car so I don't really need these. They are 17"  borrani rims with cad finish spokes and cone style hubs. No rust on the spokes and the rims and hubs still look really nice. Only damage I can see at all is where a light shield has put some light rub marks on one rim. Have bearings in them for Anglia spindles and almost new modern motorcycle tires on them. $400 plus shipping. I have trouble loading pics on here, but I will email or text them to anyone who is interested

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Pouring an engine block after it has been bored
« on: November 18, 2016, 12:23:34 PM »
Ok, I found the problem with the motor in my car. Back when I last ran this block it was a 4.5" stroke with aluminum rods so to get clearance the notches cut into the bottom of the water jackets. At the time it was going in a street car so in the interest of cooling the bottom of the jackets got filled with epoxy all was fine with that. Now it seems the epoxy has degraded and fell apart. I am thinking of re doing the epoxy then pouring the block. I know not the best to pour after it has been bored but not much else I can do outside of getting another one. My question is what filler will distort the bores the least? And should I just pour the bottom up to the freeze pugs, or go all the way to the water pump?

Front Engine Dragsters / Finally made a pass
« on: November 11, 2016, 08:31:28 PM »
After a busy summer of working on the FED, I finally took it down to Farmington dragway for the test and tune tonight. And while things didn't go as well as I had planned, I can say the car hooked god and launched nice and straight. I made a couple of nice easy test runs and all seemed well so I decided it was time to make a real pass. Car ran great on the burnout, backed it up and staged. Left at 4500 off the transbrake it hooked hard 1.18 sixty foot and I'm pretty sure that was clocked by the rear wheels. But about 150' I got massive blow by out of the breathers, so it I shut it off early. I guess I have to tear back into the motor and see what broke. I'm guessing either a head gasket or piston. It still has good oil pressure and no funny noises but it's really puffing out of the valve covers. All and all it was still nice to finally get to take it for a drive

Jon's Wheel House / slicks?
« on: October 23, 2016, 03:54:22 PM »
I see a lot of talk on here about the 2585 goodyear slicks, But I notice most of the talk is on jr. fuel cars and such that are making a good bit more hp than I am. I'm looking to purchase some new slicks for my build and I was wondering if they would be good for a bracket FED or if there is something else that will work well for me. My car is a 178" david beard chassis with a 526 BBC and a glide. 5,000 rpm converter with 4.20 gear. Going to be doing mostly 1/8 mile runs. Thanks for any input from those of you have some seat time in one these cars

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / BBC stud girdles
« on: October 15, 2016, 05:42:37 AM »
Does anyone here know what stud girdle will fit BBC pro comp heads? I ordered one from procomp and it won't work on their own heads. So now I really don't know which one to try. I'm running out of time before winter is going to shut me down for the year

Drag Racing / battery mounting?
« on: September 28, 2016, 05:16:31 PM »
Question for those of you have an onboard battery, how did you mount it? I've been trying to come up with a nice clean way to mount mine but haven't come up with anything that I really like
