Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Learners questions...

Just what I was hoping to hear....I will use the slicks I have for this season and may try a set of M/Ts. WO, I was thinking the same thing about the exhaust.

Front Engine Dragsters / Learners questions...
« on: April 18, 2019, 08:08:30 AM »
Well this is my second season of racing and I continue to impress myself with an exceedingly expanding lack of knowledge. I have learned that if you want to play you gotta pay so I have spent all winter doing upgrades....including a NOS system that I am still debugging but will save those problems for another thread. I do have questions about tires and exhaust pipes though. Wideopen custom made me a set of zoomies that I love. However, after my first run on nitrous I noted that they blue up pretty good about 1/3 of the way up. Is this pretty normal when running spray? I remember back from my days of working on motorcycles blue pipes meant a fuel mixture that was too lean. I pulled the plugs and they look pretty good, not white like a lean mixture. Second, how many runs should I get out of a set of slicks? The ones I have on now have got about 6 runs on them and I do not smoke the tires excessively on burnout. Someone told me that once you begin to see vertical lines on the tires they are done. Is this true? Seems to me that I should get 15-20 runs out of a set before needing replaced. Does anyone recommend a better brand than Hoosier? Please see pics. Again thanks in advance for any input...John

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Timing retard....

Decided to go with a newer MSD ignition box to attempt to fix my problem....time for an upgrade on it also. The MSD-7AL-3 should make things a lot simpler and has the ability to retard the timing up to as much as 20*. Looks like a pretty good device for strict racing, I guess we will see.

Yeah BK, it is right on the money.

Something tells me this Ignition box is set to run at 38-40 degrees and more advanced. After putting some thought and effort into the internet I believe I need the MSD timing retard module that will allow me to set this timing back to 30-36 degrees to run my NOS. My problem is that this module has a 2 pin setup which plugs directly into the MSD-7......which does not offer that feature. If this is true.....do I need to upgrade my ignition box to accept a timing retard module or buy one that already has that feature built into it? I would like to hear others thoughts before I go spending that type of money.

Front Engine Dragsters / Timing retard....

OK fellas, I need some education here. I installed all my NOS system and everything seems to be working as should, all I have to do is retard my timing a few degrees as a last step but this is kicking me pretty good. Last year I ran it at the strip without touching the timing. When I put a light on it the timing was set to a white mark the previous owner had at 38-40 degrees and the engine ran well. When I move the crank trigger to attempt to retard it a few degrees I simply lose spark. When I put it back I run again. Run great when the light shows 40*, 50*, even 60* but put it one notch below that white mark and I have no spark at all. I am running a crank trigger to a MSD-7A ignition box. Is there something about this particular box that I just don't know about? I tried to google it but can find no info....there is plenty of info on a MSD-7AL but my ignition box clearly lacks the L. I am hesitant to run my NOS without the proper timing set. I got a feeling this ignition box may have been manufactured in the time of the steam engine. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Front Engine Dragsters / shifter problems...
« on: March 05, 2019, 06:04:47 AM »
Having some difficulty here, hope for some help. I purchased a Digital Delay Elite RPM switch to replace the old MSD system for auto shift and aside from the switch not performing as it should, which I am calling Digital Delay today, I noted that the shift solenoid has a difficult time shifting from 1st to 2nd gear due to friction in the cable. I would like to purchase a new cable but am having a hard time identifying the type shifter I have. It has cc stik on the side of it but I get no hits at all when I google that. If anyone can steer me in the right direction to get a 4 foot cable or can identify which company makes this shifter it would be a help.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: AFR system...

Yeah, I just wanted to incorporate the AFR feature of the Max 5 for added protection. I was going to stick to the recommended jetting from Express. It would just be nice to know what the ratio is.

Front Engine Dragsters / AFR system...
« on: February 04, 2019, 05:01:43 AM »
After buying a complete system from Nitrous Express, I am currently installing and wiring my FED. I purchased a maximizer 5 progressive controller unit with the intention of hooking up an AFR sensor to it to safeguard my engine. It has become apparent that I do not fully understand the components of such a system. I went to buy a sensor then found out that I need to purchase a complete module which then plugs into something else. After totaling up the cost I hit at about $800 and stopped before I purchased to get some advice. What do I really need to have a functioning sensor that I can hook up to the Lambda wire of my max 5. The company has suggested I stick with a system from AEM or Innovative. If I can't figure this out the only other option is a $3 plug for the bung....which does not look too bad right now.

165" FED with a 327, first year running was pretty consistent at mid 9s, 140-143mph. Plan to weigh it this spring but estimate around 1650lbs. If I wasn't so green at the wheel I feel it could get into the low 9s with better reaction time and proper shifting.

Thanks fellas, getting ready to run wire and plumb this week, good advice. I ordered another regulator and will run my fuel off the main line....will post pics when done.

Good thought BK but the regulator is actually the T....the 10 runs into the bottom of it and the duel 6s come off of each side
