Front Engine Dragsters / Tin Work Questions
« on: August 12, 2019, 09:17:25 AM »
I've got a little K-88 I've been working on and am getting ready for body panels - sides and a cowl piece.  I do want the sides to wrap around in the back (similar to the Albertson-Olds car) and am curious what material (steel, aluminum) and thickness would be recommended or what have you used?
Here is the car:

Roo Man's Room / Coupler Cover Design Ideas - Shorty Glide/Olds Rear
« on: July 01, 2019, 10:23:01 AM »
I've got a shorty glide coupled to an '59 Olds rearend and I'm in the process of designing a coupler cover.  Since the olds third member doesn't have bolts at the pinion like a 9", I had planned to CNC a steel plate that picks up 3 bolts on the back of the transmission and then have 2 halves of .125" wall steel tubing clamshell off the plate to extend back and cover the nose of the third member.

I was reviewing the General Regulations before starting and noticed the last part of Section 2.4 states...."All covers must be securely mounted to the frame, suitable crossmember, reverser or third member."  I notice the back of the transmission is not an option and honestly I don't even know what a reverser is.

Before I start building cross members any ideas on design/mounting configurations?

Thank You Roo.

Roo Man's Room / Rearend Upright Strap Thickness Requirement
« on: December 18, 2018, 08:32:48 AM »
What is the required thickness of the vertical straps in the mounting of a rearend?  Mine are 3/16" (purchased from a well-known chassis builder) and I had another chassis builder tell me over the weekend they need to be 1/4" minimum.
I've tried to locate the requirement in NHRA and SFI regs but I'm not having much luck and I could sure use some clarification.

Front Engine Dragsters / Throttle Linkage/Cable Help...Ideas??
« on: November 19, 2018, 01:03:37 PM »
I'm kinda scratching my head on this and looking for input/ideas on what to do for a throttle pedal and linkage or cable setup.  The 5 carbs will all be tied together (non-progressive) and can open by pulling or pushing depending on setup.  These pictures are the best that I have now and I still don't have my tranny shields and locking dipstick on so it will get tighter.
Plan A:
Mount a pedal on a pedestal off the frame then run a cable by going forward off the pedal, through the mid-plate, around the front of the engine and back around to "push" them open.  Seems like a long way around the barn (literally) and I will need to route the cable around the magneto and various other stuff to get there.
Plan B:
Mount a pedal on a pedestal off the frame then build some type of Z bar across the back of the mid-plate to get to the left side of the mid-plate, go through the mid-plate with a cable to "pull" them open.  I'm not really sure if there will be enough room to do this and honestly have not given this approach much thought.
I'm curious what others have done and would like to have your input on what you would do here.

Roo Man's Room / Anti-Rotation Bracket Ideas - 57-64 Olds

Roo - I'm curious what you (or others) recommend for an anti-rotation bracket set up on a 57-64 olds rearend. What you've done, anything available off the shelf...etc...

Your Builds / Photo Gallery / K-88 / 6 Cylinder
« on: March 21, 2016, 08:55:12 AM »
Well I've had this in my mind for a number of years and have decided to get busy and start making this a reality.  I've always enjoyed 6 cylinders and I want to start off by saying a huge inspiration for this build was a man by the name of Joe Umphenour who ran 6 cylinder dragsters here in Colorado in the late 50's through the 60's.  Joe passed in 2010 but many of us remember him and admire what he accomplished including being inducted into the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame.  I think of Joe often.

My build is based on K-88 Chassis Research (reproduction by Cornfield Customs in Loveland, Ohio) and will run a 302 GMC 6 cylinder with a '58 olds rearend - transmission tbd.  Currently I'm gathering parts and will be mocking up what I can.  I welcome any constructive input as I really enjoy the front engine dragster scene even though mine is maybe a bit different.

Roo Man's Room / Where can you run??
« on: July 01, 2015, 08:29:48 AM »
So I've had in the back of my mind for years about building a little K-88 style dragster with a 302 GMC.

I can't shake it so have come to the realization that it needs to happen.  The picture isn't a K-88 chassis but gives an idea of the route I'm heading.

I have a lead on an aftermarket frame and I'm looking for an answer that I haven't been able to find information on.

1. The chassis I'm looking at is mild steel, 1/8" wall, tig welded and is the K-88 design.  Obviously it won't meet NHRA specs but can I run it at say Meltdown Drags on other specialty events?? If so where??  I'm in Colorado but willing to travel some with it.
