Title: 6 cylinder Race Results Thread
Post by: Dolmetsch on May 22, 2014, 03:58:08 AM
WE will keep this thread for posting our results.
I ran Saturday at Historic Picton Airfield. I only had time for a couple of runs as I was also booked to play fiddle in another town the same day. I needed however to make a pass on my car with the new tunnel ram installed. About 11.30 I climbed in and drove up for my run. I had run the car at home but not long. By the time I got to the line it was getting a bit baulky but was still running. I was pitted against a 460 Ford in a Probuilt 32Bantam roadster. I have run him before and beat him once out of three. I staged at around 3700 RPM. I could tell the car wanted to load up. I left on him like jack the bear. The slant six began popping a bit but did run the whole way. He got me, however braked to give me the win. I was behind but considering the car was not running well I was surprised I was at least still in the game. I took the car home then. No point in killing it. It needed going over. After much searching I discovered Monday that one of the metering plates in one of the Holley 500s had been doctored allowing that set of three cylinders to run so rich the plugs were sooted over. They were not wet so it had been firing but not well. These were used carbs I had redone but I didn't know their history. I used a number drill dull end to prob the PCVR holes behind the power valve to see if they were the proper size. On was 17 thou oversize. That caused the cylinders fed by the carb to run super rich under full power but normal otherwise. Not wanting to get caught again I ordered 2 brand new metering plates from Holley. That way both carbs will be exactly right. Hopefully that will give me what I want. I need to find a test site. The 50 feet in front of the house  driveway to driveway(U drive) is obviously not enuf. Plates should be here today. Next race is june 21.

Went to Historic Picton Airfield today and ran. Carbs and manifold with new headers performed wonderfully. Need a bigger fuel pump as I can empty the float bowls in first gear just before the shift just enuf to get  slight burble.. After that it settles down to the job at hand. First pass it went so fast and pulled so hard in top end I chickened out about 20 feet before the finishline. Next pass I forced myself to stay on it to the eyes. (notice I said To not Through) I was heard to say that" that is as fast as I ever want to go". Now I know for some of you it would be nothing but for me it is right at the very edge of my comfort zone. The manifold a tunnel ram and the headers are making some significant power. How do I know? No one would run against me in the pairings so I had to run all my runs alone.

I have gone through the whole fuel system piece by piece. Not only found the offending part but reworked several others. I believe I am already for the next race. hopefully that will be the complete solution but talk is cheap. When the arms drop we shall know of we did the right things or not.
