Title: Another UK racer
Post by: PSweeney on February 14, 2014, 01:48:49 PM
Hi, room for one more, another racer from the UK.

Had a little 120in slingshot with a V6 then V8, ran 12.01 @ 111mph.  Graduated to a 23T altered, ran that for 3 years, ran 8.49 @ 152. Sold the altered to have kids, and decided to build another slingshot, currently 75% built, 138in 420cu in stroked 400 SBC injected on alky, chutebacker half body, 5 point cage etc.

Will post some pic but here's a video of some testing with the altered to start you off.

Nice, is that the track were the show Wheeler / Dealer makes his runs at, the earth burns down track and the high wall in back of the burn out pad looks the same?

The track is Shakespeare county raceway AKA "shakey" or "Avon park"

It's near Stratford upon Avon home of William Shakespeare

Wheeler dealers have used this track and I think also Santa pod

Is the wall behind the burn out pit used as a sound barrier? It looks very high.

your right yes the track is used in the program.  The wall is a sound barrier, the site has been hosting motorsports of various kinds since after the war but is faced with all sorts of problems with the local authority over noise and local disruption.  Racing can only take place on certain weekends and there is a very strict curfew of 5pm.  It's a grass roots track minimal facilities but ran by very nice people who do a good job with very little resource. The site is also used as an airfield, on one occasion a micralite emergency landed at the top end as two alky funny cars sat in pre-stage.

sound attenuation wall 24-foot high that’s 1,800 feet long was build here for the same reasons.

yeah it's bull, the airfield has been there longer than any of the local housing developments but the track has never grown to a level where it could defend itself as something that's "needed" or worth saving hence they have to operate under strict rules, its still very much run on a hobby level and therefore not something the locals have an issue campaigning against.
