Title: 220" FED build
Post by: 225digger on May 12, 2013, 11:49:54 AM
been a long time coming , but i have been putting my dragster together over the past few weeks , i 1st started bending tubing on april 26th  i pick at it here and there not in a real hurry to get it done , but id like to hit the track maybe in july . who knows . when its done its done ! .... but i do have the majority of the stuff to get it done or atleast into a rolling chassis . since im usually busy with work i typically hoard alot of parts before i even start a project this way i dont need to wait to get parts but i think the big parts needed are transmission , center chunk , fire extinguishers , and a few little odd ball parts.....

  220" wheel base , kind pissed i cut the tubing short wanted to go 225 to keep my screen name correct , but the heck with it..... {i did have a 225" RED , and the owner before me had "digger" painted on the side of the car hence the 225digger}

heres some pics ..... any suggestions please let me know....and please remember im not a chassis builder , so dont beat me up to bad

sat may 11th i started the front end .  the drop axle is from SW race cars , heavy duty 1-5/8 .120w  i DO NOT want to use radius rods , i will beef up the axle mount with either a plate or some sort of tube diagonal brace .  any comments on how you would do this area is highly appreciated .  if its unclear , the lower rails are 1-1/4 i notched the rails so the axle would fit into the rails , this also gave me the correct spindle hieght .

I love it ;)  Who makes that nose if you don't mind me asking? Also like the solid front axle I don't
care for the torsion front myself although some do! My FED will have a solid axle also pretty narrow just my preferance I like em tucked ;D  Keep taking pics as you go love the build have you decided on a body yet?  Same tire on mine also I have some American Trac stars 15x14 with the 10.5x33!!!

Those V Series Welds will look nasty on that car 8)

i got the nose from parks , not cheap , i think around 300 bucks , but VERY nice piece , i also got his rear end up right and the motor plate up rights , made a few things easier for me .

i do plain on posting more pics as i go might be a few weeks , very busy in the shop just had a guy quit and now im just under the gun with double the work

body wise just from the engine back , nothing else . i kinda like the naked cars myself .

I like the naked cars, too. But you're gonna spend a lot of extra money for aluminium just out to the motor because it's WAY OUT THERE!!! But I hear that's a Parks thing. I'm not worthy to judge... That is the longest line-up bar I have ever seen outside of porn...

frank did help influence how far out to put it . i have some SW race cars fed blue prints im sort of using for guidance , and i think  in there ists around 40" out in a 200" car .

the alignment bar is from mark williams .   think its 80"   something like 1/4w 2-1/2 tubing . its real beafy !

no pics for the weekend , but i did get all the up right put in the front end . going to be a very long week before memorial day getting customers jobs done so wont be able to touch it till next weekend :(

well over the past few weeks i got the front end almost done . got the uprights and diags in . still going to add another cross bar in the upper rail above the front axle ....... but next move . i need to make front motor plates , and also a plate that attaches the stock chevy motor mounts to the upper frame rails ...... then its onto finishing up the roll cage . i ordered an ISP seat foam kit . so i need to make that then the cage ...... then i think its ready for final welding !..... will post more when i get the chance . more work than show and tell around here these days ......

Need to whack them handlebars about 6 feet lower, somebody's gonna look stupid trying to ride down the road like that. Drag bars would look a lot better on that bike, and 'ya might even be able to control it...

i like this style better than a frame with a high neck and long front end which is pretty much the same thing your just getting the bars up there higher with the frame instead of apes ....  im also 6'4'' and fit this bike fine , i built it for me , as you can see it only has 1 seat , its for me , no one else . so i dont care what others think becuase im very comfortable on it . and it also handles very well , its no rice rocket , but i can cruise thru the hills of our area at a pretty good clip i cant give you a mph becuase there isnt a speedo on it ... but o well .

Steve, you bet it's a Honda V-twin water-cooled motor. A turbo version was offered for a short time (Honda CX500 Turbo).

Yes, it was Honda's attempt to copy the Moto Guzzi

This is what it looked like when he started, and if you look closely the next project is on the left in the rear shot and the back half has already been cut off.

It is but I believe there is reliance here as the projects still involves working with tubes, configuring suspension, keeping things lite. Who knows what might transferee, it certainly isn't flower pots.

Some of my most memorable drag racing was on a two wheeler. My first dragbikes were turbocharged inline four cylinders. The last bike was built in Buffalo NY by Jim DiTullio " Puppet". I ran it in NHRA PSB in 1992. I haven't found much that translates to my FED.

Sorry, I didn't intend to be offensive, I just popped off, evidently. No disrespect intended. Tastes differ, I realize that, not everyone would agree with what I think is cool either. If that were the case, we'd all be playing with identical toys.

ted, dragster looks good, a little late to be saying this, (And you probably accounted for it already) buut the upper frame rail around the motor looks awfully close. Which is good, except for how are you going to run yuor diaper straps? just curious, ours on our dragster is a pain to put on.wanted to save you a headache at the track,,

hey matt , on the RED i had i ran the straps on the outside of the upper rails to the header flanges this way i didnt need to try and snake them between the block and rail . much easier that way ..... im not sure if ill run a diaper on this , or make a tall belly pan , im thinking of doing a belly pan this time around .
