Title: SPE steering box rebuild
Post by: wideopen231 on October 26, 2020, 07:33:57 PM
ANyone rebuild spe steering box or at least have parts for them. Mine has butt load of slop and would like to get rid of it. If can't find parts I will be replacing it this winter, but there is long list of parts. Most wanted and few needed that I would rather put money to work on if can.

If you cant find parts to fix them the Strange unit should bolt in its place.

Not much in there for parts, if the worm is worn you could probably build it up and machine it back but thats not a simple project unless you're a machinist.  The pin that rides in the groove could be repaired or replaced the same way. I'm not sure if the box is bushed at the pivot points or not but that would be the only other wear point.

Guess machining a new worm would be same work as re-machining  it.Yea joking there. I do machine work but not setup for all of that tool wise. While new one is pretty expensive, not so much compared to building new front end.LOL

When I opened mine up it was the sector pin wobbling around in the arm. Just had to repair the hole in the arm and it was all good after that.
I did buy parts from Mark Williams at the time but I dont see them listed any more.

When I opened mine up it was the sector pin wobbling around in the arm.

I was told by my chassis guy to avoid turning the car at rest by cranking on the steering wheel as it puts undue stress on the steering box guts. I try to turn it by grabbing the front tire - or roll the car slightly while turning it.

It was like that when I bought the car but your right and I avoided turning it without it moving. I think taking about 15 degrees of caster out helped also.
