Hi everyone. My name is Chuck Waters. I started drag racing in 1976 with a big block Camaro, moved up to gas FEDs and on to NHRA Top Alcohol Dragsters in 1989. My best ET and speed is 5.97@233mph. I've been out of racing since 1995 but I should be back out again this year with a new Jr Fuel car.
-
Hi Chuck how are you doing on the car ? I like the pictures of your block on the HAMB super light!
-
Hey Bill. Thanks for asking about the car. I'm presently still working on the final piston design which is the last "major" thing that needs finishing. The block has a bit over 30 lbs machined out of it.
-
Pictures please!
-
Here is a few of the car...
-
Hi Chuck. Thanks for pictures, "First Class" DF
-
Thanks DF. Here is a picture of the block. Hopefully we haven't gone "over center" on the lightening!
-
Chuck - I see you're going for the total package this time around. You must stay up waaay later at night then the rest of us : ) DF
-
Started assembling the pieces for the "final" mock up of my engine...
-
Looking good Chuck . That stuff just takes forever!
-
Thanks for the encouragement Bill! I'm going to just keep chipping away.
-
Nice Chuck:
Thanks for the post. Good looking ride.
Your at that point were the to do list grows more then the done list. :-\
Good luck
Endeavor to persevere. ...LOL ;)
Luke
-
Luke...you hit the nail on the head. At this point I have lists for my lists.
-
Nand P build nice rides!
-
Yeah they really do...and there is much more than meets the eye to make it fast. Frank and Scott have probably already forgotten more than I'll ever know about these cars.
-
Going to need to modify my injector a little because of the deck height.
-
modifing parts is that not waht racing ia mostly about? I may have bought cpl parts that did not need work of some type but can not remember what they would be.
-
Chuck is that a short deck block?
-
It's not one of the REAL short ones. It's 8.900"
-
Frank and Scott are the best. You have got some real nice stuff there.
-
Wow! 'Bout all I can say.
Ken
-
Here are a few pictures of the paint that was done by Nub Grafix. The Rocket Science theme comes from my work. Nub added actual missile guidance equations in candy that kind of change with different lighting.
-
Chuck Car looks bad ass ! Can't wait to see it at the track!
-
Finished up assembling the short block...
-
Wow, super nice build

Finished up assembling the short block...
Nice parts! What block is this?
-
Wow, super nice build
Thank you. It has been a 4 year project. I've been really fortunate to get a lot of help and encouragement. I can't say enough good things about Frank and Scott Parks, Gregg Hekimian, Brian Darcy, Jon Hansen, Bill Masiello and Roo.
-
Finished up assembling the short block...
Nice parts! What block is this?
The block is a Dart Iron Eagle, compacted graphite cast iron. It was lightened by LSM

Wow, CGI! You're not messing around coupmerc. Nice build, keeps us posted if/when you dyno it.
-
Finished building all of the external drives. Mag will be driven off of the front of the cam. Fuel pump is driven off of the back of the drysump pump.
-
Hey chuck spent last weekend with brian darcy at englishtown and i must say that Neil and parks car is fantastic the workmanship is over the top and the thought for component placement and design is outstanding the light weight and ease of maint makes it my choice if i want to take it to the next level good luck with your car. Brian has his rig figured out and there is meat on the bone good things to come. Maybe see you at the valley.
-
Almost ready to drop into the frame...
-
clean engine!!
-
Chuck If It runs as good as it looks and it looks good your going to fly !
-
Thanks guys. The past few nights have been spent working on a bunch of small stuff. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Just make sure that light at the end of the tunnel is not a freight train :)
Roo
-
I'm hoping that light is a win light Roo! Anyway...my motor started up for the first time tonight. We broke out the single malt.
-
Car is ready to go do some testing...
-
WOW, what a Great Looking Parks car !
But there most be something wrong with you, your shop is WAY TO CLEAN !!
Where, when are you planning on racing ? I'd love to have you come out west and race with us in the NHRA Heritage Jr Fuel series.
Maybe you and Darcy could team up and put both cars in one trailer, what do you think ?
Jon Hansen, Hayden Wheels, and Jr Fuel Dragster Association
-
Nice to meet you yesterday!
-
Glenn...it was really my pleasure! I'll be back out to Epping tomorrow to cheer you and Bill on.
Jon...I'm planning on running the D1 Comp circuit in 2015 but still need to get re-licensed at this time. I definitely want to come out west at some point. It would be cool (and a great show!) to get all these J/F cars in the same place at the same time. I'll talk to Brian at Epping tomorrow and you can work on him at Bakersfield next month.
-
Beautiful work!
-
Love the low line stance.
-
almost too pretty to race!
-
GREAT LOOKING CAR!!!!!!! ,, Tim Jones
-
hemidakota, ricardo1967, Chris and Tim Jones...Thanks for all the good words! I guess at the end of the day, I just want it to be fast.

Very nice!

DON'T WE ALL? Looks like your off to good start.
-
Yikes! Car is light... weighs 1070 lbs with no fuel, ballast and driver. A good problem to have.
-
coupemerc - gorgeous, excellent planning and execution on your part. A lot of late nights thinking this one through and through. Like the "3 window" too, classy! DF

Now you can put your ballast where you need it the most !!
-
Thanks DF. I've been told by more than one person that I have a bad habit of over-thinking things!
Bill...I'm going out with the balance close to Parks/Darcy. It should be pretty safe as their motors are stronger than mine.
-
A few pictures from Day 1 testing. Spent the day making about 100 adjustments. Did not get to the starting line yet. Next time...
-
A few more...
-
REALLY NICE. Did you get to drive it around in the pits?
-
Man oh man, Chuck, that's one bitchin digger! Please keep us posted.
-
Looks like you are getting there ! Some times it takes a whole day just to get all of the little things done !
-
Nice looking ride!!! You should be super proud of it. You have what some of us aspire to.
-
Very nice indeed !
-
Great Detail...
Looking good.
-
OK! Lets hear how she runs. If half as good as she looks the driver needs to bready for a ride.
-
Wow you have done an amazing job of making this car sanitary, so clean it looks simple but it's not! Very nice
-
Went to Epping yesterday and got to make the two required "moderate" runs for my license. Was trying to make three but we got interrupted by rain. I had the "rusty driver" tune up in it (no timing/lots of fuel). Launched it at 5K. It went 7.30@171 on the first pass, then went 7.19@183 on the second pass.
-
Nice work...under the index...got to be happy!
-
Thanks John! Yeah, I'm happy with the car. Driver can still do better! Hope things are going well with your deal.
-
Great looking ride.........
We have been using a Petersen oil pump on our car (pump is half the size of your setup) .
What is the pump size and number you are using? We are getting a new pump ordered in the next few weeks for the new blown engine for our car. We will be using a Petersen pump again as we are very happy with their products.
-
Thanks...The pump is a Peterson R4, 5 stage dry sump pump. It has 4 vacuum stages and 1 pump stage. I'm using the one that is modified to run the fuel pump off of the back of the dry sump pump. I like that because if the pump belt ever breaks or comes off the pulley and you loose oil pressure, the fuel pump stops too and the engine stops running. On my deal, the pump is turning at 50% crank speed.

Hi Chuck:
Thanks for the progress reports. Everything looks great. Glad for ya.
When I was at the NASA store the other day they had a bumper sticker that said " its not rocket science, ..oh wait yes it is" Want me to get you one?? I will be heading back there for work in about a month + or - http://www.thespacestore.com/space-room-decorations/nasa-decals-stickers/it-s-not-rocket-science-bumper-sticker

Luke are you going to Florida, Kennedy Space center? If so shoot me a pm I'm ten minutes south.
Chuck could you pm your contact info? I have a question regarding your vacuum set up.
Thanks again for building a nice piece of motivation........
-
Luke, I actually visit Cape Canaveral quite often. Next trip I'll shoot over to Kennedy and pick up some stickers. Way cool! Thanks.

Nice job Chuck! I really like your car, the low cage stance. Geez, it sounds way nitro loaded!
-
Very nice Chuck ! Was that the 7.19 run ?
-
Exactly...that one was a 19
-
Nice. Very nice ! JR fuel ?
-
It's a B/ND. Thanks!

8) very nice, now go racing!
-
Enjoyed seeing your video. You look comfy : ) right at home...
-
Chuck are you going to the divisional at Lebanon or Epping ?
-
Hi Bill. Yes...I'm planning to enter both races. Presently trying to figure out what the process of entering is. It's been a while! Will you and/or BJ be racing?
-
Chuck all you have to do is show up ! There is no pre entry for divisional races . Bj and I will be there with his car for sure ! We are taking his car to Norwalk next week for the national event !
-
Getting ready to go to the dyno...
-
Best your way Chuck this holiday season.
Wishing you many HP,s. for a merry Christmas present. ;) :) 8)
Luke
-
I see you made some headers for the dyno ! If you need a set of collector headers I have a set of 2 to 2 1/8 step header with a merge collector that you could use ! Good Luck and make a lot of hp.

Thanks Luke! Merry Christmas to you too. Looks like 2017 will be pretty exciting for your deal!

Hi Bill, I'm trying to figure out how to send you an attachment that shows my header flange dimensions. Thanks!
-
Bill,
Do your header flanges match these dimensions?
Thanks,
Chuck
-
I will measure mine today
-
Chuck I just checked mine and they are a little off from your measurements . Not by much but different . My bolt pattern is a spread port 15 - 18 degree head .

Bill, Thanks for checking! I'll go with the pieces that I have. Will keep you posted.

Cathy and I just got back from a dyno session. We're real happy with the power. We left the session with 80 hp more than we arrived with. Special thanks to Frank Iaconio and Frankie Jr for their help. They said that they have not seen a 23 degree head make that much power before and left us with a few ideas and things to tweak on. Here's a video of the last pull when we were a bit "over center" on the timing...

That's cool !!
-
Awesome Chuck...can't wait to see you at the track next year !!!
-
Been in that room a time or two my self ! Frank is one of those guy's who just knows how to make horse power with any thing from a small block to Pro Stock ! Just curious did you guys talk about enclosing your cam tunnel ? We did it with one of Billys motors and I know a couple of other comp guys that have done it .
-
Awesome Chuck...can't wait to see you at the track next year !!!
Me too ! John did you figure out your trans brake problem ?
-
We believe so...TB solenoid was releasing inconsistently. Trans is out for a freshen-up now.
-

Would be cool to get all the cars in the same place at the same event next season!

I think, in general, there are a few things I need to do with my oiling system. Keeping the oil away from where is doesn't need to be is certainly one of them. Another is pressure. I just have way too much.
Hanging out with Frank for a couple days was really cool. Growing up I used to watch him battle Glidden, WJ, Grump and Shepherd for all of those championships. He's a living legend...and man does he know how to run a dyno!
-
Nice:
Frank Iaconio, dang thats a name that had not heard in awhile.
Very nice Chuck looks like a great season coming your way.
Merry Christmas dude or whatever you practice best wishes .
