Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Christmas is coming.
« on: October 30, 2017, 08:38:14 PM »
I made metal stuff for Christmas presents last year.

If you had some broken, unusable transmission parts (gears and bearings), feel like donating them and are coming to the banquet I could find a good use for them.

Front Engine Dragsters / MOVED: suggestions for drive shaft protection
« on: October 29, 2017, 09:11:27 PM »
This topic has been moved to Roo Man's Room.
This topic and it's importance became extremely clear at our race at Gateway Motorsports Park. We had a competitor that had a driveshaft go through the body panel. It just nicked his leg. Keith made up the new shield and I sure he will have good input on this subject.

September 8th - 9th
ScottRods Hot RodNationals at the Funny Car Nationals
US 131 Motorsports Park
Martin, Mi 49070

This is a beautiful trace, on the par with Norwalk, in my opinion the second nicest track we race at.

Weather should be beautiful, not hot.

Are you coming?

As you can see there will be people in the stands, and the track has great lights for night racing

Spud Miller's Cave / Tuning Help
« on: August 06, 2017, 03:34:53 PM »
I have two topics I wish to talk about.

1) I only have hat nozzles, cylinders 2 and 7 run hotter then the rest and would like to cool them down, how can I accomplish this?

2) I have been working on tuning so that I run it out without lifting. This past race my first time trail was too slow (8.08) the second was to fast (7.96) the third was too slow (8.05) and my first round of elimination was to fast (7.89 yep, way to fast). I have been tuning using my main jet and pulley adjustments. I need to add to the mix, timing. It would be really nice to have a pointer at the base of the distributor (something I can make up), and a disk on the base of the distributor (it could be split to get it on) marked with "degree" markings so that timing changes could be made without pulling a timing light out. These markings would not necessarily have to correspond to degrees of advance and retarding. They could be used as quick reference and over time I would know what each mark meant in regards to how many degrees in timing they referenced.

Does anyone know of someone that makes such a "degree gauge" for the base of the distributor? I would like it to sit on the top of the base, not on the side.

Thanks Glenn

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Engine is stiff, hard to turn over???
« on: June 17, 2017, 08:54:31 PM »

Went up for our first round of eliminations.

Started fine, then it sounded like the starter was hung up in the flex plate, revved it up and the sound did not go away.

Shut it off and started it up, started fine. What the heck try a burn out to see if it would shake it free.

Half way through the burn out it shut off.

Pulled over to the wall, and got out.

Opponent made his run.

Got back in and was pushed back, and went to the pits.

Starter strains to turn the engine over.

Drained the oil, no metal, but little tiny bits of red, looks and feels like RTV. No red RTV was used building the engine only black and silver.

I have a System 1 remote filter, dumped it and no metal. Found one ore two of the tiny red bits.

Put  new oil in, new starter and it still strains to turn it over.

Pulled the blower belt, blower is not seized.

Pulled one valve cover, all looks normal, I forgot to turn the engine over to check to see if the rocker arms were moving, Think they are ok as there are no strange noises. This will have to be checked when I get home.

There are no strange noises from the bottom end when turned over with the starter.

Pulled all the plugs the front two were the hottest, discoloration all the way around the end of the plug, but not into the treads.

Used a bore scope in those two cylinders, tops of the pistons look brand new, cross hatching on the cylinder walls still look new.

I'm perplexed. Put it all back together, and put it in the trailer. When I get home the first thing I will do is pull the torque converter bolts.

Next would be to pull the pan and see if the rods will move, then maybe pull the main caps.

I'm open to ideas.

Tow Vehicles / LED Replacement light panels for 500 W Halogen
« on: May 17, 2017, 06:43:40 PM »
Has anyone replaced their Quartz Halogen side lights with a LED Panel?

I have been thinking of using these, I know they are expensive, but have 7,000 Lumens (Quartz have 10,000) and are Warm White, not the harsh cool white

Uses 33 watts

Jon's Wheel House / Hoosier replacement tires
« on: March 01, 2017, 11:36:22 AM »
Well went to replace my tires as I am seeing some cracking in the side wall.

I was running 31 12 15, with a 97 inch circumference, with a c11 compound (mid range) on a 12 inch rim

They do not make them any more.

they offer

31.5 13.5 15,  with a 99.5 inch circumference, with a c07 compound (mid range (little softer)) they say they fit on 12 - 14 recommend 14

32.0 14.0 15,  with a 102 inch circumference, with a c07 compound (mid range (little softer)) they say they fit on 12 - 14 recommend 14

I believe you have

33 12 15,  with a 103 inch circumference, with a XXX compound (XXX XXXX)  recommend rim XX

I have been running 8.00 at 165 but could set up to 7.5 at 180

Suggestions?
