Front Engine Dragsters / Re: negatives of FED as bracket car?
« on: July 04, 2019, 01:14:42 PM »
we have won a lot of events bracket racing, only thing we fight is if the track starts to go away in the later rounds it seems to affect us before the red, door car guys.

thanks again guys, I would really like to try a 10" wheel with our same tire and a taller first gear in the trans.  both are expensive. I think we are fighting the track more than the car, most cars in are class are index, throttle stop cars.(will run 7 dial 9.05)  it just seems like poor track conditions affect us before the red guys. I love to bracket race and go rounds and I hate to say it but thinking about a ignition were I can retard the timing for a set amount of time and get out of the hole clean on less than stellar track conditions. I don't care what the number is as long as it runs the number. Or is it possible I just don't have enough power to keep it in the tires?

bracket race fed fighting a hook and spin concern. lower hp 8.70sec 150mph car sbc carbureted 1520 lbs  with driver, pg with 1.80 first 4.11 rear gy 2585 on 12" wheel, launch at 4200 converter flashes 5500 shift at 7000 traps at 7300.  at our home track it will sixty mid 1.20s at good track it will sixty low 1.19s. my problem is during the day with some track temp it will hook and spin the tires quite consistently and go rounds but when we get to later rounds and things start to cool off its a crap shoot on hooking or not. I think our weight balance is pretty good, does not seem like the wb is unloading the tires, car always goes straight.  I know there are a ton more variables to this but do you guys see any red flags in this set up?

In my opinion a recovery style puke tank is a must. And don't forget there is a difference in caps, not all are meant for a recovery system.  We had a hard time with our low, flat mounted radiator at first. I could fill and run the pump forever and it would still get hot and puke.  Pulling a vacuum on the system has been the trick for us.

Are you sure your not still just fighting air in the system, and being a little low is because some air worked out?  We fill ours from the lowest point (radiator) with a hose connected to the petcock and pull a vacuum from the highest point (radiator cap). Good luck.

We bracket race a lower horse power FED and have had good results with the 2585 tire.

1) T
HE COUPLER MUST BE LONG ENOUGH THAT THE GROUND SURFACE IS COMPLETELY THROUGH THE BUSHING IN THE TRANSMISSION TAIL HOUS
-
ING
.  I
F THIS CANNOT BE OBTAINED IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO GO TO A DRIVE SHAFT WITH
4
COUPLERS AND A SPLINED DRIVESHAFT
.
2) I
N ORDER TO KEEP THE COUPLER PROPERLY ENGAGED IN DIFFERENTIAL COUPLER IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE A SPACER INSERTED IN TO THE
COUPLER BEFORE INSTALLING IN THE TRANSMISSION
.  T
HE SPACER NEEDS TO BE A LENGTH THAT WILL ALLOW APPROXIMATELY
1/8”
OF MOVEMENT
OF THE COUPLER IN AND OUT
.  T
HIS MOVEMENT IS NECESSARY BECAUSE OF NORMAL MOVEMENT OF THE CHASSIS
. T
HE SPACER CAN BE MADE
FROM ALUMINUM
,
HARDWOOD OR PLASTIC
(
NOT SUPPLIED BY
M/W)
ROUND MATERIAL
.
3) A
LIGNMENT IS CRITICAL
,
ANY ABNORMAL WEAR IS A SIGN THAT THE ENGINE
-

REAR PINION CENTERLINE ARE NOT PERFECTLY
ALIGNED

OUPLERS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO TAKE ANY MISALIGNMENT
