Gassers / Cool old Anglia!
« on: November 17, 2015, 05:51:55 PM »
I got the latest issue of Gasser Wars Magazine ( issue 99 ) in the mail today and this was on the back cover.  One reason the Golden age of Drag Racing was so COOL!   Nothing was cookie cutter, people were always trying something different whether it worked or not.

I wasn't sure where to post this but was just curious about Don Dolmetsch.  He's a long time Mopar guy and used to post a lot on this sight but I see he hasn't posted for a year now!

Hi Tommy, Maybe give Glenn Rapp a call at 605-336-1515.   He Built (in 1967) and still owns and operates Thunder Valley.  He had a fueler back in the day and for years Thunder Valley had a Div. 5 points meet and until the early 80s ran 3 or 4 Fuel shows each summer besides the points meet.  He knows alot of Div. 5 history!

"Just spent 3500 to repair the motor home..."

That's a big bummer Glenn... you have a nice RV. Engine troubles? (it's an ISB if I remember right)

It is a 6CTA, Ref # 53-34874-004 engine # 45358278, model C8.3-325, read that as 325 HP full mechanical (no computer injection).

This engine was  $5,000 upgrade from the stock 300 HP engine that came in the coach and is used in fire trucks and marine applications.

Problem was the hydraulic pump for the Power Steering, jacks and coolant fan(uses a hydraulic motor to drive side discharge fan)

Thats too bad Glenn!   Theres a few 6CTAs powering Generators in my territory and they seem to be a good engine.  But in a standby application they don't get alot of hours.

If you get a bad one we call a Cummins a Cum-a-part and a Caterpiller a Scatterpillar :D  Like anything, there all subject to fail at the most inoppertune time.  Good Luck!

I have a 68 Dodge Coronet with a 383 and I dropped almost 4 tenths off my ET when I switched to E85.  It was hard to believe but it happened.  I was impressed!

E85 works! What is the compression ratio?

10 to 1 is the compression.  Believe it or not I'm still running the original long block from 1968.  I did give it a set of fresh bearing, rings and hand lapped the stock valves but other than that its genuine Chrysler steel.   I have about a grand total into the engine and half of that is the E85 carb.  It runs 12.50s all day long in a 3600 lb car.

Besides the carb everything else is the same as when I ran gas.  I have a good low restriction filter coming out of the tank and a Carter electric pump on the rear frame rail feeding a Carter Mechanical pump on the engine with 3/8" line all the way.  At the end of the season I remove the carb and run Marvel through it and flush the rest of the system out with gas and have never had a problem.    Its great fuel!!

If the front half of the car still exists it would be cool to to have that much of the car incorperated into a recreation.  You probably already thought of this but did the car ever appear in a magazine?  I have a couple thousand old magazines in my collection and would love to help if I can!

If you have not driven a 9 second racecar before I suggest Glenn's idea Frank Hawley driving school. Your mind and body need to reprogram itself for that kind of input, so his school will give you important tips and the experience of driving a dragster. Also you can get your license from the school. The main difference between RED and FED is what you see in front of you, as far as the accelation goes.
Another idea, but no school, is to book a plane ticket and hotel to come out to Bakersfield for the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion Oct 22-25, the pits will be full of FED, some for sale and you can get loads of advice, besides watching FED race.
As far as driving a dragster, the cheapest ride would be, while you are in SoCal drive to SpeedZone in the LA area where you can make 3 runs in a RED that will run 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds and feel 7'gs of acceleration and 2'gs of de-acceleration for $15. Yes it's an amusement park, but it will get you the feeling of driving a dragster with a SBC behind you, a shift butten on the butterfly steering wheel,  and the brake system feels like the chute opening. These are real tube chassis cars with slicks and narrow front wheels. Just check-out their website and make that part of your west coast trip. JUst fly into LAX, rent a car, go to SpeedZone, it's open until midnight, and then the next day drive 2 hours to Bakersfield for the full adventure.
If you decide on Bakersfield, let me know and you can hang-out with our JrFuel team.

Jon is right about Bakersfield.   A Great event and its Rail Heaven!

Front Engine Dragsters / 7 Second Love Affair
« on: September 05, 2015, 01:16:10 PM »
The misses went out with her friends last night so I had a Friday night on my own.   What to do?  I started looking through our DVDs and grabbbed "7 Second Love Affair"   For those who haven't seen it I reccomend going to Amazon or Fleebay and getting a copy.  Its a GREAT movie!!  A must see for all FED lovers.

Filmed mostly at Lions in 1966 and showing alot of the top Rail Jockys from back then and if ya watch it over and over you always see something new.
