Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / stall speed

I have a chance to get a ultimate converter for a reasonable price . It has a steel stator and diode sprag and after talking to Lenny there he determined that the stall would be 6200, My new motor is just a hilborn injected 388 sbc with about 560 hp and a redline of 7500. I'm running 430's  with 33 inch wheels in the back and was wondering if this would be too loose. mMy engine guy says it would be alright but what does anyone else run with a similar setup.

Jut finished my new paint scheme. Now just have to wait for the motor to comeback from the builder and time to get ready for racing.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Re: Trans brake Problem

thanks for the quick reply. It is not a pro brake and it seems to disengage fine when shifting out of reverse. One of the things you said caught me which was the mis match of the reverse piston. I have tried the brake cold in the car in my garage without a burnout and it released immediately. But on the track after the burnout it seemed to be the problem. I will check the assembly and see if it is binding.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Trans brake Problem

i have a power glide in my fed built by a local race transmission builder and we have been having a strange problem with the trans brake. The brake is a brand new TSI package we put in last year and it has been doing some strange things. I only ended up using the brake 6 times last year because it would never release quickly, it started off with a delay of 4 seconds when i released it first time and after the next times i tried it it got better to a 2 second delay after releasing it before it took off, we went through it just recently and added heavy springs  and removed a reverse disc hoping it will be better.  We went through everything and everything else looked good inside.Talked to the people at TSI and they had no ideas. I met someone at the track and they said they the same problem and they thought it was the converter but my transmission guru doesn't think so. He has done a lot of transmissions and has never seen this before. we cleaned up the reverse piston and it moves freely. I'm going to try this in the spring and see if this works and if not i will have to change out the brake. have you ever encountered anything like this?

I moved my battery up front this winter and I added a ballast system. Last year I would get a occasional wobble after I let off quickly  going through the traps. Reading it says you should have around 350 pounds on the front wheels. I was less than 260 before and now with my ballast set up I can load up to 54 pounds if i need it. Now with the battery and ballast I should just be over 335 on the front wheels. I hope this helps.

Pretty cool. I always like to start the engine as early as possible it gets the build going, more motivation  for me.

Season is over for us here in Alberta Canada,  Go off to a slow start but ended up hitting a different race every weekend. First year running ended up getting a total of 53 passes in. best time of my life. Best et was only a 9.39 with 140.39 but it was my first kick at the cat. Changing up the motor to a sbc 302 z setup  and want to try with it, redline should be in the high 9's motor was a super gas engine out of my buddies race car hopefully it will speed things up a bit if not I will refresh my 355 and go for a gear change. This site was a lot of help into getting me going. Just like to thank everyone for all the information and posts.

Front Engine Dragsters / Car burped getting too warm
« on: August 09, 2015, 05:28:42 PM »
I was running on a 1/8 mile this weekend and the runs were less than fifteen minutes apart. car got hot on one run and shot a burst of  water out my recovery tank, freaked me out, I though it was spraying  methanol but it was just water. With water in the block should I have it completely closed? What is the best remote water pump to get? I'm considering putting a small rad in it.

Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / Trans bae is releasing way to slow.

In my car I has a ATI brake and the car has a dozen passes on it, used the brake the firt time off the 7 passs and it held for 4 secs before releasing. Second time even longer. Brake is wired in direct no relay with a Large B and M button. Wondering should I be adjusting my low band or do I have other problems, without the brake foot pedaled it takes off like xxxx.

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Making that first run in your new car
« on: June 22, 2015, 10:45:42 AM »
Attention taken, I was lucky enough to do my first passes in my new car this weekend. I was out at a local track here in Alberta Canada called Medicine Hat. I had already had all my medical stuff done for my license to make sure I would be fine in the car. I went out for a weekend of testing and tuning and was a bit intimidated at first, new guy in a new car but the guys at the track made me feel alright. I started my first run off with just a launch only and a run down track at mid power. I was totally amazed how the car hooked up it  caught me off guard, been through it lots of times in a door car but nothing like this  and I even forgot to shift at first, too many things running through my head at first. Went back to the pits and a couple of racers and track officials came by and asked how it was and proceeded to give me a tonne of pointers on what I should do. Made me feel real good and put my head in another place. Second run another launch and good full power run for a hundred yards or so, it felt good made it into second gear and was happy all went well. Fellow racers come by and we went over the run and more comments and pointers and they said see how I feel and maybe think about licensing if it goes well but only drive as I feel comfortable if it doesn't feel right don't do it, back out there always is another time. Third run was a good launch full power just past half and it was amazing how it felt, Everyone was  happy with the pass.  We were getting ready for the next pass and had a problem with start up, my reverse lockout wasn't working and it shut us down for the night. Spent most of the night running through what I had to do on start up and how to calm down and we headed off to the track and got all set up and went to test the emergency shutdown and the brand new switch didn't work. ending up taking it apart and repaired it and we were ready to run again. Totally last all my calmness I built up from the night before.  Third run and it felt good stayed into it about 2/3's down the track nice shutdown and everything. Now for the final two passes and flat out if I wanted to get my license. Lots of coaching and comment from the drivers watching me but always telling me to just go as long as it feels right and to back off if I'm not comfortable. I got to staging cleared the first light took a deep breath and inched ahead and watched the second yellow and when the last yellow hit I was on it and went flat out , it felt amazing and it went down the track beautifully nice feeling and before I knew it was shutdown. Final run same thing thought about what everyone told me and concentrated took my breaths between the lights and nailed it took off amazing got a bit squirrely and was just going to let off and the car straightened out and ran down the rest of the track like arrow. Not too fast but my last two full runs were at 10.23 and 10.27 but at our altitude the local racers said that it would be fine for the licensing. So a couple of them and the track official allowing me to have the completed paperwork for my license. Roo I totally understand how it could go crazy, all my runs I limited my rpm to 6000 had a lot more to go but I wanted to come home in one piece for fathers day. I think the mental part of racing about getting every thing inline in your head is a lot more important than just acting like a macho dude and nailing it and showing off to every and putting people in danger. It was a amazing weekend and as from this forum and the fellow racers that helped me out this weekend the best thing that I learnt is the time you are too old to listen to someone offering help is the time you are too old to race. Thanks again to You and everyone else offering help all the time on this forum.
