Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Piston rings?
« on: December 25, 2021, 11:39:24 AM »
What are the common composition of rings for an alcohol engine ? Blown or NA.
Finally putting my engine together.
I have two different ring sets here that will work for my 4.500 bore. Just want to see what people here think.
This is a 9000 rpm 11-11.5 compression engine

What compression does A-Fuel (injected nitro) run?
Curious as I'm building a backup engine and may try something new. Used to blown fuel driving.

What approximate HP are you shooting for?
What head flow numbers are your heads?
Curious to compare to our build..

Our new 560" is 14.5 to 1 NA looking forward to what amount of Nitro it likes or doesn't like I guess.

Have the chassis certed. The chassis guy can tell you what the deficits are. Money well spent... Run books are nice but not always a good indicator. Our current car is a 5pt Nostalgia Top Fuel certified 200 inch chassis.  We run with a 6.0 cert 3yr vs 5.99 quicker NTF 1yr tag. Our car runs dead straight all but 1 pass out of 450-500 passes(extreme tire shake). We only have about 1/3 of our runs recorded as many of the passes are like copied runs.
Good luck with your project what ever it ends up being.

Events / 2021 New England Nationals Epping
« on: May 26, 2021, 02:33:19 PM »
So who's going this year? We will be there Thursday through Sunday at close.
Our Supercat is one of the cars on display, in the Nostalgia area, making noise. We may run it a few times down the track, will have to see.

Working on the car this week.  We are getting ready for the New England Nationals at Epping NH June 11-13. We were invited to be one of the cars in the Cackle area.  We may even make a few passes during the Event. Should be fun, as it was in 2019.
Hope to see some of you there.
Please stop by if you go....

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: Front Tires Popping out of the Beams.

Additional weight in the front is not a bad thing...
In the picture below (our car) I have 60lbs of lead, 2 fire bottles, fuel tank. Just behind the fuel tank is the XSpower battery.  We now have a nice balance on the run.
We are moving the rearward fire bottle forward and putting the battery in front of the new larger fuel tank
Our new engine is 3X"s the power of the current setup.  We also have an additional 40 lbs of lead plates if needed for the front.

Not much going on here lately.....
I took our car out of the corner hibernation zone after 3.5 years on its roller rack. Got it cleaned up Saturday and brand new 6.0 cert at New England Dragway Sunday. With the exception of one needed additional kidney bar the car even passed NTF 5.99 quicker.  I'll get the bar added when I find someone in Maine, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts to add it and set of canard wings this year.
The new engine is finally moving forward again. We will be in Bowling Green next month for the Buick GS Nationals with the iron block still in the car. New engine should be running by the end of June.

Taller tires front and back is the quickest and probably easiest/cheapest.
How close are you to Rocky Mount ? Send me a pm

Happy New Year to you as well.
May this be the year of living in the straight lane not all over the place like a bad pass, as 2020 was.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Re: vacuum pump line
« on: December 06, 2020, 01:02:35 PM »
As Jeff said things are slow on the boards lately. I personally would like to get to next year already. The last 13 months has really been a struggle after losing our 22 year old Son while serving this country as a Marine. He was also an important member of our race team and a large void is in our  daily lives.
Enough of my problems now back to yours.
I use a black press on hose (XRP) for my vacuum lines. It has a flex steel core that will not crush but is flexible.
We use it for all our fuel, Oil and vacuum hose needs.
www.goodvibesracing.com XRP push on hoses.
Let me know if that is what you need.

Wanted to buy / Re: Fuel tank

Bring some good cardboard and tape with you. Make a mockup while you are at the car. Make it the same size as the maximum size it could be. That way you will know what you have to work with.
