Roo Man's Room / Questions on gear ratios selection.
« on: July 11, 2014, 05:53:11 AM »
Roo, I am wanting to start a discussion on gear selection. I suppose this question could fit in other threads as well ? I have changed my 223" FED from an injected SBC to a blown SBC and a lot of questions have come to mind. How does one optimize a starting line ratio? I know trans gearing, convertor/clutch, R & P and tire selection as well as the wheelie bar are the main considerations. Engine location and weight location, I'm sure  have to be considered.

I have only considered a "finish line" rpm in determining gear selection and would like to learn more about a start to finish package.

Thanks. George

Spud Miller's Cave / SBC 377 w/6:71.
« on: July 02, 2014, 11:49:02 AM »
Hello Spud. I have changed my combo from injected to blown and so far have kept the gearing the same. I know I have gone from a 650hp 355 to a 800hp + 377. We put 5 runs on it last weekend and it ran a best 1/8 mile et of 4.76 and best mph was 156. I am running a PG with a 1.80 Low gear a new 9" 6200 stall convertor and a 4.86 gear ( Mopar 8.75 742). I would like to leave the 4.86 in it as it is a 9310 build and anything else is new street gear stuff. I ran a 12 X 31 tire and also have a set of 12 X 33s. My problem is the car is too aggressive at the hit and so far tire pressure and wheelie bar height adjustments haven't helped much. I am running a 1 to 1 pulley ratio and am seeing 12-15 psi on a memory gauge setup. A 4.60 et is where I want to be. I will be running 1/8 mile only.

Maybe my question is: what does a alky blower want? RPM as high as safely possible or something to load it harder ?

After I get this figured out I will be addressing cold cylinders . Convertor helper? Thanks so much > George

Roo Man's Room / Fire System
« on: March 27, 2014, 01:58:01 AM »
We have abandon our trusty 355 injected SBC in favor of a 375 CID 6:71 blower combination. This change should take us from 5.00 to somewhere in the mid 4S 1/8 mile. We have ran a #5 FE-36 fire system but we need to upgrade to a #20 system.

I would like to stay with FE-36. I spoke with a local fire equipment company and he explained that the race car stuff is manufactured by each company. I found a few #10 fe-36 bottles but they have a "sprinkler" head on them. It's a setup used to protect the fuel cell area of round track cars.

My question is, can I have the heads changed to a cable pull head on one bottle and a pressure actuated head on the other? The shipping of pressurized bottles looks a bit $$. I am in central Illinois and am hoping a 200 mile drive to Chicago or Indy could produce what I'm looking for.

Thank you again. George Alewelt

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Ceramic Coating Exhaust
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:13:08 AM »
I have spoke with a few shops in central Illinois and I was surprised most powder coaters don't do ceramic. One shop told me the product was a five day cold cure. I think I can borrow or buy the application equipment locally. How about the product? Thanks. George 62563

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / SBC crankshaft hub w/6:71
« on: March 11, 2014, 05:37:33 PM »
I am putting a 4.125 X 3.48 SBC together. We have a RCD girdle but I'm concerned about the wall thickness of the available hub. I have a 3/16 and 1/4 keyway on the crank. Should I look for a BBC OD hub? The timing chain cover is a cast Hilborn so cutting it for a larger seal is no biggie. I am also wanting to run my MSD crank trigger . I spoke with Randy @Good Vibrations today and left a VM with John Lane at ATI. Thanks. George

OH, also got a question on "burndown breathers" . Are they all for 1.25 hose? I'm looking at the cast units with the quick connects. Pretty pricey! Any other options or parts available.

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Mag or electronic ignition.
« on: June 20, 2013, 05:14:02 AM »
It's time for a new thread.

I currently run the MSD 12LT magneto with a tach convertor to run the rpm modules. We upgraded the engine last year and the engine builder/ dyno operator talked me into a MSD digital 6 + system. We dynoed the engine with a MSD 6 with good numbers. MSD told me not to run the Digital 6 + if I were using the same battery for both the ignition and to start the car. I didn't see any on track difference between the Digial  6+ and the 12LT mag.

Spark plug gap is the reason I tried the electronic system as I could run a .030 gap. With the mag .018 is the maximum. I'm told the wider you can open the plug gap the greater the potential power.

What's your take on this? Thanks. George

Roo Man's Room / Chassis building to a Spec.
« on: May 30, 2013, 02:21:32 PM »
As I read some of the chassis being built or modified, I don't see a reference to a SFI spec. or possibly another standard. Am I mistaken or are there a good percentage of builds that never get inspected? Is it only sanction tracks that require a current chassis cert. ? I would think even a non-sanctioned contest should have to meet some requirement for insurance reasons. Just curious. George

Matt Shaff's Engine Shop / Coolant system without radiator or pump.
« on: March 31, 2013, 07:06:17 AM »
I'm looking for pictures and/or system designs of proven applications on a SBC. I would like to run with the block and heads full of coolant and exchange only when the engine is too hot. I don't expect I will need to dump all the coolant after an 1/8 mile pass. I'm running a Hilborn 327B manifold.

Thanks. George
