Roo Man's Room / Re: Which Flywheel, Clutch, Presure Plate
« on: June 10, 2016, 06:21:34 PM »
The best clutch you can buy, is the one that won't saw though that bell housing and destroy your feet. Parts flying could easily hit other people standing around watching.
A 2 disc pedal clutch designed for a dragster- Altered application. Flywheel would be best in steel (not iron) as the weight will help provide more torque at less RPM. Do not buy a street duel disc clutch. If buying used, have it inspected &certified. I don't think a real race clutch will even fit inside that bell housing, you should have a real clutch can.

The Altered chassis I built last year got 1 1/2 X 120 wall, because it was in stock & 095 wasn't. I had used the same material on my FED when I built it.   058 never

Front Engine Dragsters / Re: 1/8th mile gears
« on: April 20, 2016, 06:04:55 PM »
My approach to this is very different. I run a T400  = 3 speed. I run a 354 gear and 33 tire. My 1/8 mile times are just about the same as most 7.60 NE1 cars run in the 1/8 using shorter tires & lower gears. Doing the math I think it's real close to the same RPM across the board with the Power glide crowd. I recommend a 390 or 410 gear for the Mopar 360 and spend the money on a good converter & work with the tune up. I have never seen the real need to change gears for 1/8 mile when using a 3 speed as the high gear shift is much later and with the right tire and gear not made until after the 1/8 mile. Done right the car will think it's just a 2 speed ( with 1/8 mile gears). Things to think about.

Can you post up a time slip so we can see the brake down  on your runs.  PS I have a NOS set of W2's out in the shop, those would wake up that 360 !!

Most cars I have owned and all the cars I've built have a seat strap. This is a steel strip .062 to .125 thick & one to two inches wide. This is welded to the shoulder hoop or the seat belt bar just below the shoulder hoop, the strap then follows the seat contour to the lower seat support bar at the front of the seat and welded to it. I form this strap to the driver then build the seat to follow the strap. The strap adds a lot of support to the seat.

Roger's info is correct, but in your case the issue is the block is way to tall for that short stroke. The best fix is to run a long rod, this moves the pin up in the piston. The now shorter piston just lost a lot of weight and with the pin higher in the piston the side thrust is way better. Go to any piston Co. web site and look at MODERN racing pistons, they are very short & used with long rods. Compression heights around 1.0 to 1.2 are the norm in small blocks.

The top improvement needed is something around a 6.2 rod and a lot shorter compression height piston. On that 56 block, I cut a small groove in the #5 cam bore to connect the oil holes so it will oil the lifters without the cam having a flat. Do this before installing the bearing.

Hi Bill  I watched the Bang Shift video and you can see the rain hitting the camera lens. Car has been sitting for 3 years and it was good to get out with it. We are going to paint and do up the chrome & polishing stuff this winter. Every one that came by the pits said don't paint it, most thought it had a look we had wanted ! We made a lot of new friends & Ford fans, and drank a little moonshine after the racing was done.

When capping those holes it's a real good idea to drill drain backs in the front to aid in getting oil back to the pan. Hyflow  Dynamics web site has pics of the mod and others,

Hey  We were there with the Nightmare Dragster/ Keven Robinson  driving. NE1  we made it via a red light to round 2. Started to rain as both cars went in to stage, by the time the chutes were out it was a monsoon. Getting back to the pits was a real wet ordeal. We had a fun week.

Sorry,  a completely wrong rear for this build,  its the small 49 that was used (2/3's the size of that '57)

Bruce you don't need to be sorry for posting your opinion.  I have owned quite a few FED's that saw time as J/F and the very early ones did have the early ?-56 Olds rear (junk) but most cars built in the stated 65 though 67 era had 8 3/4 and a couple I owned in the early 70's did have the larger 57-64 Olds. One car had the 55=57 Chevy, I can't even imagine a new car being built in 67 with the early Olds. The 8 3/4 would be my top choice for use with a little Chevy., but if cost is a factor ? Just like my FED I run now and built it with a Dana 60. I blew up to many 8 3/4 Chryslers but I don't run SBC's.

That's how I do mine. I go down the side and eliminate the mount bosses & also cut the screw in freeze plugs to flush. I use a ball end mill and cut in small steps as I go down the sides in rows, then finish up with a hand grinder to make the sides smooth.
