Dan Dishon's Transmission Den / ATF for FED's Powerglide?
« on: May 02, 2015, 04:20:20 PM »
Hey guys,
Any recommendations for transmission fluid for my FED’'s glide? It’s a 1.76:1 with manual valve body, transbrake and Coan 4500 rpm converter. It’s not a high buck deal by any means (homebuilt SBC400). I haven’t opened up this glide yet (it came with the car-roller), but so far so good. It does leak profusely while parked. I plan pulling it out sometime to refresh or at least change gaskets and seals.

What’s the approximated fluid capacity (standard pan, no cooler)?

Anything special when selecting a dipstick for it?

Thanks as always.

Drag Racing / Great Drag Racing Quotes - from WDIFL

I had a great time reading these Great Drag Racing Quotes from the We Did It For Love website:

I hope you enjoy them too. Send them in if you have new ones!

My favorite was:

Hi guys,

I'm looking for tips on how to distinguish chassis parts (e.g. tubing) made of mild steel and 4130 CrMo.

I'm convinced my 173" FED (late 60's/early 70's era, believed to be a SPE chassis) is plain mild steel but I wouldn't mind knowing for sure.

2nd question:
Let's say my chassis is mild steel and it needs a front-half... would it make sense the front-half with CroMo? Weight wise, it probably doesn't, because being a vintage FED the engine isn't very far out and it requires a heavy front end to keep the front tires on the ground.

PS.: The car is currently not SFI tagged, but I consider it an option in the future.

Thanks as always. I'm so grateful for you guys taking a break from the fab shop to share your wisdom here.

Roo Man's Room / My friend's RED got front-halved, on the track!
« on: October 01, 2014, 07:54:31 PM »
I good friend was racing his RED this weekend at Brown County Dragway (Bean Blossom, IN), business as usual. He does his 128 MPH / 5.99 sec pass (throttle stop) and goes for another round. Then right after the burnout, he hears a loud bang and the rest is history, both front lower rails cracked open!

Car bio: '97 Spitzer Dragster, alky injected 477 BBC

What do you guys think? Repairable? Slip a pipe inside and weld it together? Does it need to be front-halved? Spitzer estimated $2k+ to front-half it...

BCD is not the smoothest track, but I wonder if this is a trailer-induced fatigue crack. Although his roundtrip to the track is only 42 miles.

Roo Man's Room / Maytag steering box??
« on: August 13, 2014, 07:35:08 PM »
I've heard this and want to fact check with you guys, just for curiosity (I'm not taking this route):

Is it true that early dragsters (50's or 60's?) used steering boxex adapted from a gear reduction box off Maytag washing machines??

Front Engine Dragsters / Nissan turbo FED
« on: February 16, 2013, 09:42:28 AM »
This FED falls into the “Dare To Be Different” category… Very nice job IMO. This thing is a catapult! Engine is an inline-six turbo Nissan, mentioned 850 RWHP, doing 7.5 sec. Different, but nonetheless very respectful!

RIPS FED 1st time out, licencing passes and the 1st 2 runs

RIPS FED 7.56 @ 169MPH

Enjoy!

Spud Miller's Cave / Nitromethane article on Hot Rod magazine
« on: February 09, 2013, 09:17:00 AM »
The latest Hot Rod magazine (April/13) has a nice 7-page article about nitromethane fuel, written by Marlan Davis.

Spud's Nitro Notes (at http://fuelinjectionent.com/) remains unbeatable nevertheless.

Enjoy!

Front Engine Dragsters / Howdy!
« on: February 02, 2013, 02:25:12 PM »
Thanks Glen, Spud, Roo and everybody else behind this FED forum.

I’m a FED nut from Columbus, IN (originally from Brazil) with just a couple test passes on my nostalgia FED. The biggest lesson I learned so far is: “It’s not as simple as it looks!”… so please be patient with me as I’ll be asking a lot of questions and advices.

The rig is an old 173’ wheelbase FED I bought as a roller in Markle, IN in 2005. Then I slowly built a SBC 406 (mostly from swap meet used parts), topped with a 1963 Hilborn fuel Injector, model 265-C-8C (1"-13/16").

Here’s a couple videos of the first fire up after engine build:

Then the first test passes, in Bean Blossom, IN. A lot of improvisation to make it there, in the last day of the season in 2011:

Then one more test pass in 2012…

As you can see… there’s a lot to be learned!
