E85???

<< < (2/3) > >>

lake_harley:
I have found a "how-to" on bangshift.com that seems pretty complete. I printed it out so I could have it at hand in my shop if I decide to give it a try. The fellow who did the write up talked about the secondary metering jets and how he didn't think any were available that would be small enough to get the secondaries rich enough with the E85, and said he just left them out! Through the conversion he mentions numbered drill bit diameters he used on various jets and passages.

I'll be in TX next week for a huge swap meet and will keep my eyes open for a "victim" carb. Since few have any love for Q-jets I should be able to pick one up cheap, and I love cheap. Perhaps I'm just a glutton for punishing myself by going off of mainstream?

Thanks again for the input!

Lynn

you should take a look at this site https://quadrajetparts.com/ they have alot of varied parts that might be useful

In my experience E85 is a pain in the rear end. The fuel seems to be inconsistent and finding the tune up has been a nightmare and not really any proven power gains.
But like anything we could’ve just been doing it wrong.

Good luck, keep us posted.

What swap meet is in Texas?

lake_harley:
I'll be at the Pate Swap Meet at Texas Motor Speedway. This will be my 3rd time. It's a 9.5+ Hr. trip and well worth it. I bought more stuff at that swap meet last year than I have ever found at any swap meet. Best thing is....it's stuff I'm using! ;D The big find last year was a pair of 17" wire wheels and a pair of actual Anglia spindles. When those things were bought it solidified the idea of building a FED. Until then I was on the fence about a FED vs T-bodied Altered. Funny thing is that no more than 20 minutes after I found the wires and spindles I found 2 pair of spindle-mount wheels that would have been perfect for an altered. I guess I'll call that fate?! The shame is that the spindle mounts were cheaper than the wires. :-\ Maybe I'll find some spindle mount, altered-friendly wheels this year for the next build. ::)

Back to E85.....I have read that the actual ethanol content can fluctuate and be quite low at some pumps/times......as low as low 50% ethanol content. I can see a significant percentage of ethanol really screwing with jetting. It would be a constant chase if it's 60% one week and 80% the next. Granted, it would be a bit easier with a Holley vs. the Q-jet I now have to re-jet, but it's still extra fiddling around. At this point it's more of a consideration for later after the car is completed and has been run at least a few times.

The engine I have is only about 8.9:1 compression so it'll run just fine (bracket racing) on the 91 or 93 non-ethanol I can get at several local places. The biggest reason I got thinking about E85 is it's possible benefit for the cooling effect, perhaps making it more practical for "lapping" the car rather than towing and/or pushing it around.

I welcome all input, so keep it coming. Thanks

Lynn

Anything E-85 will do Alcohol will do about 35% better and not stink like poo. Better cooling? Alcohol. Better performance? Alcohol. And yes you can run alcohol on low compression motors works great.
