Beadlocks, tire size, rear gear???
« on: February 10, 2019, 02:31:00 PM »
Just got the new BBC settled in the dragster and wondering y'all's opinion on a few things.
1st the car has 15" wheels and am thinking of maybe having a set of 16 bread locked but is it necessary? What's the Advantage (other than clamp force on the bread) to a 16 v 15.
2nd car has a 3.00 gear we're thinking of going up to a 4.xx any suggestions?
3rd what size tire?

The car is a 225" slip joint fed motor is big chief headed 565 made 1100 HP at 7200rpm
Chassis builder said it weighs 1275 with a sbc no driver.  The plan is basically just go real fast and try to qualify in some local top Dragster type shootout maybe hit a few nhra divisional races.

Any recommendations?

At your power level you should be 6.90'S or quicker and I would think 190's ! You don't need bead locks till 209 but they are a great safety item ! I wold think a 3.89 gear should be about right ! Just don't know what tire would work for you ! Car looks nice !

Check with your tire selection before stepping up to a 16" .   Small selection of usable tires for a 16"wheel

Dre that was a big concern to me and I'm also real curious if there is an advantage to going to the taller tires that 16 would use.

Goodyear only offers a 17" wide tire for a 16"rim and that's waaaaay to wide for a dragster
M/T has a 11.5 wide tire that's 33"tall , but it takes a 15" wide rim and has a stiff sidewall --tooo bazzar for me
Hoosier has their Nost T/F tire  which is  34 x 12 x 16 but is an exclusive to the Highspeed motorsports team and you would have to go thru them to purchase
M an H has a  33.3 (104" dia)x 13 x 16 which would work well for a dragster and they offer 2 shorter dia (100") tire sizes that fit a 16"rim

So really not  much of a selection for dragster usage over the 15" dia.

A side note--- before you get beadlocks on 15" rims you must check the clearance between the brake caliper and the beadlock ring, some systems will require new mounting brackets and smaller rotors
