Powerglide build, which parts?
« on: December 03, 2018, 03:26:39 AM »
Hi all, a long time lurker making his first post. I'm in the planning stages of building a FED, I used to race an Altered but always wanted a FED and now is the time. When I do return to racing I'll use a big block Mopar I have (there's a blown KB waiting in the background), it's 512 cu in but pretty tame, I would guess at 700hp. I'm guessing that changing the Torqueflight trans that I used before for a Powerglide would be a good move, so I've got a standard Powerglide and have a JW bell housing and JW "wheel" to connect it to the Mopar motor. My rather long winded question is what parts would be required for the Powerglide at 700 hp, the car will be as light as I can make it.

First I would over build. It is reight between your feet. Straight cut gear planetary for sure. Quality low gear band.Red clutches in high gear drum and new pump with god quality input turbo. No need to go ringless shaft at that power level. A 4340 shaft would work,I would go step higher if mine. Then I tend to go overkill because I know I will want more power and buying twice is just more expensive. You will probably want a transbrake so valve body will be needed. Get a pro bake from any of the trans parts  company's. I like FTI,but most are good.I know FTI is just very helpful and great customer support after the sale.

You can shop around and find deals. I saved about 1500 bucks and got some great parts doing just that. Check for sale section I have valve body,JW case and Bell for hemi for sale. Will have to remove and diassemble since its in car now. If not mine I would still good aftermarket case if for nothing other than again feet right beside it and stuff happens.  If want PM for number and I can go into more details on where I found some deals  and who I shopped parts thru.

One thing I can tell you is other than motor transmission can eat money faster than anything including wife. I think last total I had more in trans than chassis,if not counting labor.

For my customers at that power level, I would do a 1.80 Straight cut gear set. 7 clutch high 5 in reverse all alto red eagles, a kevlar band, a dual ring servo, a 300m turbo spline input shaft, a reman stock pump would work but a new after market would be better, and for sure a pro brake valvebody. This combo will give you room to grow without breaking the bank.
