Usually they are put in the pan
After you have it a few weeks you will have all the info you need---Trans never gets really hot unless you are on the transbrake--after a few runs and you get on the brake temps can climb 100 degrees a second but the instant you let go of the button it falls like a rock back to normal range---temp usually stays pretty stable --it does show you how you can kill one by staying on the converter or brake too long--it will "train" you fast! After that take it out and sell it
That is what most do
If you are bracket racing it shows you how if lucky enough to be in round 6 or 7 --by then you are at a Transmission BBQ
for sure
I have always had a fascination with fast cars at the expense of more normal character development

X2 on what dusterdave said.

On my altereds my trans used to get hot enough for smoke to come out the breather if I went a few rounds. I got in the habit of pouring a 3-gallon jug of water over the PG after a run.

Then I upgraded to a Hayden cooler at the back of the car with a small fan (similar to the ones used on boats for a bilge exhaust and also on NASCAR stock cars for brake cooling). At the entrance to the cooler [the exit side of the trans] I installed a temp sensor that triggers the fan to come on (thru a relay) at 155*F. I also have a dash-mounted over-ride switch to run the fan continuously if need be that I usually use for the final round after the semi's.
When I do my burnout the fan is off. After a run when I drive up the return road the fan comes on. Works great.

mine is in pan at drain plug. I have it hooked to temp gauge that is also hooked to oil temp and both heads. I use 3 position switches,1 for heads and one for fluids. can rad all 4 with one gauge. just make sure one is off when checking  temps using other switch.

Most generally the temp sensor gets installed in the pan as close to the floor of the pan as possible.
