Laced front wheels for FED
161L:
Hello Everyone,
I am new to the board and in the process of updating a 200" S&W FED that we plan to run in NE1 or NE2
Looking to replace the front wheels with laced wire wheels. I see that some vendors have them in aluminum or in stainless. Any preference between the two? If so why?
Any preference in the make? If so why?
Thank for the help...

Stainless steel spokes on aluminum rims here.
Hayden Wheels, by Jon Hansen (member here) did a tremendously nice job on mine.

Jon Hanson Hayden Ent post on this site builds front wheels and if you go on FB (Vintage speed equip) couple used sets.
The type of rim was based on who built the wheel, the alu rims would be ANKRONT or BORRANI as the popular brands by some wheel makers and for the Chrome Steel rims were Honda "CUB" rims and least costly to obtain. All that was left was the hub design usually in alu, but some were steel. Early wheels had .100 steel spokes (cad plated) and they can look grungy after a while and polishing them strips the plating off. Most replacement and new wheels have stainless steel spokes that can be polished and stay looking good for the life of the wheel, only downside is that they are larger in dia, not that big a deal unless its a period restoration, but not an issue for what we do. Be very careful about buying used wheels, sometimes one pays too much for them and then the cost of rebuilding them to pristeen condition, you pay more money than what you can buy a new wheel for

Jon Hansen at Hayden wheels is a great guy to deal with he can sale you some ultra light wheels if your car is on a diet or just a normal weight set for most of racers. Jon rebuilt my wheels after a little wall incident and replaced only the parts needed and was very fair with prices!
Edited to fix the name......thanks Bruce
