tire bigger than 12"
« on: April 22, 2015, 02:14:10 PM »
I know most nostalgia rules require tire 12" wide or less. My deal is little different in its mainly bracket car, runs 482 or 526 ci aluminum Hemi. Not saying I am making tons of power but it should be more than most SBC combo, key word most. I know even TF nostalgia runs on 12's,but for my deal running exactly same number is priority number 1.

I am looking at gettimg a new set of tires for car and have 15x14 weld aluma star wheels. Looking at 15x14x32 MT's 3074S.  I know GY is standard issue for most. LOTS of bracket guys are getting very consistent runs on MT's.
My question is would the 14's be too much for FED. My thoughts little extra tire on questionable track condition should help keep car running same with changing conditions that happen when running 1st round at 12 noon and final close to midnight sometimes.

I have 14/31/ 15  Hoosiers on mine. First pass on new car will be Friday. Forecast says 56 degrees and there will not be many cars. I will pm you and let you know how 14" tire worked.  I only make 850 hp with my 509 bbc but should a good indicator. I think they are to short and will probably make to much rpm. In the past on my Park's car I ran 13/33/15 gy worked great.

Always ran the 33-12-15 Goodyears (compound did not matter) on a 10"rim and never once had any issue with traction. A bad lane is just that and no tire will overcome. A 14 just wads up besides carrying all that extra tire and weight. I have won a lot of races, out 60' them, never shake leaving off idle and pull the front end 3-4" at the launch over any big tire dragster (Funnys and altereds need a big tire to work), so with all that success never found the need to go with a bigger tire

Its been 12' on everything we have ran on a 12" wheel. The first combination was 600hp. Last year probably 1000. We built a new rear end wider but I really doubt we need more than a 12". We don't travel very far and I stay away from poorly prepped tracks.

Checking the MT web site the differeance in 12 and 14 wide tire is minimal. Now on GY's its quite abit more like 6 lbs per tire.

Maybe I stated it wrong. I was wondering other than weight if there where any negatives to running the 14 wide tire.  I know tire speed can be issue.I am thinking the 6600 stall and having peak tq( with new cam) just over 900 being right at stall speed. I should be ok there, still to be seen.

Maybe topic for another  thread ,How much stall change to have major effect on tire speed.Would require someone using data recorder I guess.

Hey nothing against 12" tire they work. Did not mean to imply I needed more tire than other run. Heck I hate idea of extra tire weight. More than offsets money I spent on having axles and gears cut to reduce weight. The deal I got on wheels is reason I have 14's. 2" differance seems too much to run.

Chris If you look at the Hoosier tires they make a light weight 14x32 tire in the co7 compound . It is not a real soft tire and might work for you . My son runs a different size co7 tire on his RED and it has worked very well for him .

Well got out this weekend. Weather was 48 to 53 degrees. Like I thought to much gear and to short tire. I don't think width made any difference . 60' were 1.10 to 1.13. I was out of rpm by 1000 ft. Cor ran 7.90 as soft as I could make it. Also 31" x 14 x 15 tire made the car very low.

Bill I will not be this Sunday. Need to send the MSD out. Car would just turn off. Also going to put a set for 14/32 on for more height and less gear. My change for 4.33 to 4.11 gears . I was against the chip about 1000'. There are some good pics on Lebanon's photo's for this past Sunday, Have fun this week.
