As if Las Vegas weren’t loud and ostentatious enough in its own right, the city hosts the fire and fury of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series twice each year, this event in the spring and the crucial penultimate stop on the schedule in the fall. Contested at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a crown jewel befitting this glitzy city, the event has become a pivotal stop on the tour. This event is the new home of the eight-car Pro Stock bonus event, the K&N Horsepower Challenge, the winner of which receives $50,000.
2012 Recap: Robert Hight, the only racer in the event’s 12-year history to win more than once in Funny Car, scored a third win at this event and extended his winning streak to three. Allen Johnson became the fourth different Pro Stock winner in as many events in the 2012 season by scoring a victory at an upset-laden event in which the previous three winners were eliminated in the first or second rounds. Spencer Massey hit the jackpot in the third all-Don Schumacher Racing final in Top Fuel.
