New tire recommendations for our FED
« on: July 20, 2014, 07:24:07 AM »
We need to get new tires in the next few weeks.
The car is a 200" Fed with about 1000hp and 800+ ft/lb. naturally aspirated,methanol.
Weight 1760-1780 with driver.
5200 stall PG 176 first gear
3.89 rear gear Ford 9"
wheels are 10.5x15" presently but we are thinking to go to 11.5"x15"

We have been using the Hoosier co9 compound 33x12x15 mounted on a 10.5 wheel, about 4 yrs old.

What are some recommendations from the group and why you like them...

If what  you have works, why change? I have been running that combo(except Goodyears)for the last 18 years

Supercat I would think that the 12x33 Hoosier should be just about right for your combo . There are not a lot of choices out there that will work on a FED . Good Year discontinued the 1288  12x33 tire and the 12x31's also . I put a set of the Hoosiers on mine last year and thought they were a pretty good tire . The only thing I did not like about them is that they shake badly at the end of a burnout !

Are Mickey Thompson (ET Drag series) good drag tires?

http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/strip.php?item=ETDrag

I have Mickey Thompson ET Drag 3068W 31.0/10.5-15W M5 on my FED, but I'm too much of a novice to say anything about them.

The thing I can say is that they don't leak! (yes, they're screwed)

My only info on the tires (goodyears) is that the Comp tires only come in straight increments and are to be used in our type of cars. Tires that come in 1/2" increments are more for door cars and their design does not allow one to Get up on the tire and they dont grow very much.

Ricardo As Bruce said that tire is made for high horsepower bodied cars . They have a stiff sidewall . I do have a friend who has run them on a Smallblock rear engine car and loves them ! If you already have them why not try them . You will never go wrong by screwing them . Bill

needless to say have not tried them out. From comments I have gotten I am almost expecting one of those brain rattling tire shaking deals from my TA/D. You know you get out of car still half blind ,head about to explode.

We have yet to have a shake issue with them. I have heard a from a few people about it but as I said nothing yet. We do a real nice burnout so the tires are plenty hot ;D.
Should we put the tires on the 1" wider wheels that we have? We do experience a loose back-end at times like the tires are flat. I was told we should be using a wheel that is close to the same width as the tire. Any thoughts on that issue.

Anyone near National trail dragstrip in Ohio? We will be there for a few days running the car at the end of the month.

I have been running 33x12-15 M and H RaceMasters on a 10" wheel for about the last 4 yrs and have been very satisfied. They don't show up on their website, but they are a 15" version of their 16" nostalgia topfuel tire. Their part # is MHR-69.

Wow, Supercat, I'm impressed, 1,000 hp on a NA alky FED, the only JrFuel cars I know that make that kind of power is Scott Parks, and Brian Darcy. And they run 6.70's. What size is your motor and are you running nitro ? Another question, why does your car/ driver weigh 1760-1780. Our JrFueler weighs 1440 with an all iron motor and driver, where is your extra 300 lbs ?

Ok, back to your question, most fast JF cars are running 12" wide wheels, because anything narrower it gets loose at start or after the shift to half track. We ran 10" rims for years, then found out we needed more traction at Bakersfield when sun went down and the track got loose. Then as we made more power we ran the 11" [ nite time Bakersfield] wheels were need more often, so I put together a set of our 31x12x15 GoodYears on 12" rims, which is what we run most of the time now in JrFuel "B".  Downside to 12" rims is the tires will not grow as much so we get a little slower top speed [ 187 mph instead of 189]. Most slick guys say don't go over/under 1" difference on the rims than tire width. But I know a number of racers are running 12" tires on 10" rims, just lower HP cars.
I just talked to a RED Comp racer this week-end while we were racing Comp at the Div 7 race in Sonoma, and I sold him a pair of used 33x12x15 GoodYears because his 33x12x15 Hoosiers get loose at half track and they don't grow as much as the GY's. But the Hoosiers have softer compound rubber.
I have a set of 33x10.5 x15 M/T but I have heard they need to be on 14" wide rims to work. Too bad our rules limit us to a max of 12" rims, plus they are REAL heavy, like 45 lbs on wheels EACH.  Our 31x12x15 GY's weigh 26 lbs each, mounted. It takes more power to rotate that extra 20 lbs each.
Anyway that's my 2 cents.

Have Fun,  Jon Hansen, Hayden Wheels

BTW we run allot of 7.0's using a 8700 rpm converter, and 4.88 rear gears and 1.68 first gear PG

Supercat When I ran that tire I had them on a 12 inch rim and they worked pretty good . My 60 ft's and et's were comparable with the 1288 Good Year's . I think that they need a little more air than the GoodYears . Around 7lbs seemed to work .
